Default Math problem

I know this isnt a math forum but if i dont bring up my math grade my parents said they would sell my fourwheeler. The section is called "Chapter 7: Systems of Equations and Inequalities".

Here is a type of problem we do. If anyone could explain it to me it would be greatly apprecaited.

Problem:
3y=-1/2x+ 2
Y=-x+9

Answers a.(3,6)
b.(20,-4)
c.(10,-1)
d.(-1,8)

I think you just plug in the answers for x and y and see what works. I don't know if you add both equations up first, or do them seperately.

Take the 2nd equation and plug in the right side for "y" in the 1st equation and then sole that equation for "x". Then take the number that you get and plug it into the 2nd equation in place of the "x" and you will get the value for "y". Or, you can guess by taking the the answers and pluging them into the equations and seeing if they work. Piece of cake.

Default Math problem

When I was school I really sucked at math. It wasn't until years after that somebody told me something about it and it made complete sense and after that it got easier for me.

He told me that math should be the easiest subject for everyone because the answers never change. He said as long as you follow the rules, you'll always come up with the right answer. It's not like English class where something you write can be interpreted differently by different people. So I just started looking at math as a series of rules. So just follow the steps and you'll be right all the time.

Ok here goes my bad memory again.

3y= -1/2x + 2
3(-x + 9) = -1/2x + 2
-3x + 27 = -1/2x + 2
-3x = -1/2x - 25
multiply by -1 on both sides to get rid of negatives
3x = 1/2x + 25
2.5x = 25
x = 25/2.5
x = 10

Then put x into it to figure out y

y = -x + 9
y = -10 + 9
y = 1

To check, insert both into original

3y=-1/2x+ 2

3(1) = -1/2(10) + 2
3 = -5 + 2
3 = 3

So it works, the answers for each variable are correct. x = 10 and y = 1

Get it?

Yeah, y = -1, x= 10. I think it is too cool to be able to get math help on this forum. I guess its all the gear-heads and engineers.
