I hope someone out there can give me some advice and direction. I am in the process of buying my 1st ATV and want to wear a helmet when I use it. Have run into a problem.

I have a big head (no wise remarks please!). Size 2xx is too small. I have been to three shops in the Tampa Bay area and have found no one with a helmet 3x or larger. Have also surfed the web with also no luck.

Can any of you tell me where I might find something that might fit.

Thanks

Davver

Not sure. I think the Rocky Mountain(www.rockymountiainatv.com) catalog had a sizing chart in it that compared the sizes of some major brands. If it was not that then it was the Dennis Kirk catalog(www.denniskirk.com). Keep in mind that the chart was in a printed catalog and not on the site. Hope this helps. Have fun and be safe.

I thought I was having the same problem as you. 2X felt too small. There happened to be a training course going on at the dealer where I bought my helmet. The instructor told me that 2X would fit me fine. Remember, a helmet should be tight on your head. A loose fitting helmet will offer little protection in a crash. Mine felt much better after the padding formed to my head after a couple of rides. Make sure you get the right size. Ask someone who knows, not just a saleman trying to make a quick buck. Don't sacrafice your safety with a sloppy loose fitting helmet. It should NOT move around on your head when you shake your head, even with the chin strap un-attached.

Heard tell of a guy with a big head once (also, his hat size was 7 5/8-7 3/4). He had a problem with even XXL helmets; although open-face helmets weren't as cruel as the full-face style.

Anyway, this guy bought the largest full-face helmet he could find, removed the lining, and delicately relieved (with a Dremel Moto-tool) the shock-absorbing inner material, removing only enough so he could get a wearable and reasonably comfortable fit.

Did he sacrifice some crashworthiness? Yes. Is monkeying with the liner of a helmet verboten? Yes.

However, on balance, this big-headed guy can wear a full-face helmet, at his risk, marginally reducing the crashworthiness of the device from his minor modification. He regards the protection an awful lot better than none at all.

Certainly, I wouldn't recommend this approach to anyone; each big-headed ATVer must make his own choice and take responsibility for it, as the guy in my example did.

Great advice dave00. This was my first quad and I had no idea on how to pick one. I heard someone say "they need to make your cheeks puff up". They are a snug fit. Can't say I would recomend cutting the padding on one. All I can say is wear a helmet. I have had one dirt bike wreck and one atv wreck in the last 2 months and both times I stood up and was glad that I had a helmet.

Davver, did you say you needed a xxxlarge helmet? I found some HJC helmets at www.helmetcity.com/cycle/ac-x1.html

Hope this helps a little.

My hat size it 7 3/4. I wore a Shoei xl which fit me just right. After a major crash earlier this year I had to retire the Shoei. I now wear the Arai Pro in xl and it fits just the way it should; snug around the cheeks with no movement when shaking the head side to side.

Put the helmet on and it shouldn't be able to be turned when grabbing the chin area more than an 1/8 a turn. Snug but not migrain snug. They do form in after a few rides.
