Apple Valley girl, 11, dies as ATV flips

An 11-year-old Apple Valley girl died Friday when the all-terrain vehicle she was riding flipped on top of her.
The girl and a 12-year-old friend were riding separate ATVs on the friend's grandfather's property near Hampton in Dakota County.
It appeared that the 11-year-old turned too tightly and the ATV rolled, Dakota County Sheriff Don Gudmundson said.
The 12-year-old tried in vain to lift the Polaris Sportsman 400 off of her friend and then rode about a half-mile to get her grandfather, Gudmundson said. "She was very small," he said of the friend. "There's no way she could have lifted that thing."
He said the 11-year-old, whose identity was being withheld until today so relatives could be notified, likely died instantly.
The case will be turned over to the county attorney's office, which is standard in death investigations, he said.
According to the company's Web site, the machine, with an engine size of 425 cc, weighs about 700 pounds. It also warns that children under 16 are not to ride ATVs with engine sizes larger than 90 cc and recommends that riders under 16 be supervised by adults.
Gudmundson said family members are devastated. He said that he would be surprised if he was the first sheriff in Minnesota to respond to a fatal ATV accident this year.
"And I know I won't be the last," he said.

Terrible.
Such a loss. So young too.
My prayers are with the family in there loss.
I saw something like this last fall. But no one crashed.
Couple young kids around 10 or 11 on sportsmans hauling around.
I was riding over to this old bmx track with the raptor to mess around and when they saw me they started trying to show off. I saw it go up on 2 wheeles side ways a couple times it didn't flip though.
I decided i better leave before these hot shot kids hurt them selfs.
I really wanted to yell at them but didn't want to **** them off and have them going tearing off trying to show off. Which they seemed like the type.
Parents need to watch there kids closer and larger atvs like sportsmans shouldn't be driven by 10 year olds.

thats so sad
one time we were riding with our helmets on in the woods hitting this mud puddle, and my friend hit it a little too hard with a big bear 350 and it flipped right on top of him i ran over and ripped it off of him, im surprised that i could, my adrenaline was pumping so much that i practically threw it off of him because his head was a little under the water.. it was an innocent accident it wasnt really his fault

That's a terrible story. Our prayers are with the families. Not to jump to conclusions but I wonder if there were any supervision and helmets being worn. Of course it has to be the ATV's fault. I notice they did all the details of the quad but fail to mention anything else.
