I have a bad case of spy ware on my home computer. I run ADware and find 250 files found. I delete these and can't get back on the internet. I know I need to reinstall Windows, but don't know how to do it from the safe mode.
Any ideas???
Thanks

What version of windows? If it's win2k or XP just leave the cdrom in the drive, boot into your BIOS (usually something like F1, delete, etc) and make your cdrom the first bootable device. Reboot and it should walk you through formatting and reinstalling.
Other than that here is a good link for removing spyware.

If you're running XP, DON'T REFORMAT! Go back to a system restore point prior to running Adware.
If you're running 98 (this will work on XP as well), go into the quarantine in adware. Select the scan you ran, and then "restore." Voila, problem fixed.
ALSO, make sure you're running the latest update of ad-aware (the globe icon with the mag. glass in the upper right hand corner).
btw, at least on 98, re-installing will not fix the problem.

on your system, it would be much easier to simply reinstall your TCP/IP stack and the rest of your networking components
if restoring the adware doesn't fix it. What simply needs to be done is we need to make sure all your network settings
are default or correct for your ISP. Even something as simple as an MTU value change in the registry will prevent
you from being able to go anywhere on the Internet.
Are you able to atleast get online? Or do you receive a dialup error as you try to connect...?

You guys are way over my head.... can't get on line at home at all now.
I was getting popups, getting knocked out of every thing, and getting Fatal errors every few minutes.
Happened once before, I ran adware, (I have 98), then deleted and reinstalled windows from the safe mode, but can't remember how I did it from the C:/ prompt.
Can't get even get the computer to boot up, as the skyware was attached to some of the Windows files, that's why I think I need to reinstall 98. The only way I can get booted up is with the start up disk.
thanks for your help. Sorry I'm not very good on computors.

OK, you have Win 98.
Get a win98 boot disk (floppy). If you don't have one get one here.
1. Boot the machine with the floppy in there.
2. At the c: prompt type in ""format c:"
3. After the format type in "D:/setup" if D is your cdrom
The way I use to do it was after the format I would:
1. Create a Win98 directory. "md win98"
2. Copy all setup files from 98 CDRom to the new directory you just made. "Copy d:/win98 c:/win98"
3. It takes a few minutes. Then go to the new directory. "C:/win98"
4. Type "Setup"
It's been a long time sionce I have done this so I hope I'm not leaving any steps out.

And GET RID OF INTERNET EXPLORER!!!!!!!!!!!!!
that is the gateway that is infecting your computer. The way spyware gets in is holes in IE. Netscape will do you fine, but I reccomend getting the source of all browsers, Mozilla. The Firefox version of Mozilla is the best. www.mozilla.org
FYI: I use Mozilla exclusively. I run adware scanners just to be safe, but have had 0 instances in 4 years.
My wife uses IE, refuses to use Mozilla. She has the same protections I have otherwise. She averages 4 or 5 new infections each week when the scanner scans her computer. And she uses her computer far less often than me. because of her, I have gotten quite good at removing them...
