Default California-Where do you get a sound check???

ATVA/AMA rules say to race, you have to obey your local sound limits, and that is 96dB here in Calif. So, where do you get it checked? I asked a bunch of dealerships, and the just look dumb and don't know what I mean. I don't want to show up to a desert race and be turned away because my bike is to loud.

Rangers are starting to do spot checks at a lot of riding areas, so that is another reason to be sure you comply. Seems like a dealership could make some $$$ checking sound levels, but they are clueless!

I really think there is a lot of wisdom to the "less sound, more ground" thing.

go to radio shack. They have units to measure decibels (dont know the official name of the tool) they have a few different ones... usually a 20/30 dollar unit and a 50/60 dollar unit. (you put it a certain amount of feet away at a certain throttle) (IE... 10 feet away and at 6k rpms)

In California, the procedure is 20" from the back of the bike at a 45 degree angle from the bikes axis, with the meter at a right angle to that (facing the back of the bike), and something like ~3,500 rpm.

I would gladly pay a few bucks to have my bikes tested, but I may just have to buy my own meter. But if I do, I know I will be testing bikes for the whole neighborhood!
