speaking of welders....you can use an arc welder for limited use, they work okay limited uses...

I picked up a Miller Millermatic 251 Mig Welder with 30A spoolgun....I can weld up to 1/2" with no problem and can go up to 3/4" with multiple passes.....

of course, it runs on 240V, so had to do alittle rewiring in the circuit breaker panel in the garage...

the 30A spoolgun is for welding aluminum.....

Lincoln and Miller seem to have similar models, almost look the same too....almost like someone makes them for them.....its like the ATV manufacturers, can't be outdone, have to come up with something new and improved and compete against each other....a competitive marketplace is a good thing though...

The Millermatic 251 is a breeze welding steel, doesn't take alot of skill rather than making a few setting changes and having a steady hand.....I'm playing with the 30A spoolgun today, to weld aluminum....thats alittle harder to master....

Dave, take a look at my pics. I welded the swim platform with my spool gun. The spool gun is a breeze to use, just hit some scrap first.

which pic are you talking about, don't see a swim platform...

anyways, having a hell of a time, burning up tips in the nozzle.....i stainless steel wirebrushed the crap out of the aluminum....i'm running about 35 cfm pure argon and using marine grade aluminum wire....not sure what is going on, not enough voltage, too fast of wire feed, too slow...not sure....

update: backed argon down to 25 cfm, i don't think i have enough wire feed, it always wants to burn the wire back up towards the tip....any advice, not sure whats going on....been playing with different settings.....how far away is your tip from the aluminum when welding? how much voltage are you using?
