What kind of penalties are we talking if you get popped with this kind of tax evasion. Not that I would ever do anything like that of course.

Couple thousands of dollars in fines and penalties, about a thousand or more in legal fees, possible short term jail time and of course a Felony on your record making it harder to get a job or get credit.

Somehow I think its just worth it to pay the couple hundred bucks...

It depends on the state, of course. In Kentucky, I know two guys who did this. They actually do own farms, and they claimed the ATVs were for the farm. Well, a month or so after the sale, they got letters saying that the exemption status was rejected and they had to pay the tax bill. There were no penalties. As long as you do actually own a farm, I would suspect you would have similar results.

The only problem is if you want to legaly ride on state land and parks you have to have it registerd. And to get It registerd you have to show proof that you paid sales tax. If you bought it out of state you just pay the sales tax when you get it registerd. But if your only going to be riding on private land I wouldent worry about it.

We bought 2 quads at the same time a good while ago. For some reason, we got the sport quad tax exempt and the utility w/ taxes. The ute was more expensive too, go figure.
