Default Beware when selling your quad...

Well, here's a story that might make you think twice about who you sell your quad too.

About three weeks ago I was coming home from work on a beautiful Saturday afternoon here in Ohio. It was shocking, the sun had been shining for five days straight! I was coming home to prep my bike for a brutal early spring practice session on the home track, anticipating a long Sunday. As I neared the house, to my surprise and delight, I heard the crisp sounds of a fresh two-stroke. I couldn't believe it! There, in the field next to our house, my brother's Banshee was ripping it up. Considering that it hasn't been out since last July, I was shocked.

I knew my brother was trying to sell it, but was even more astounded when I saw five young black men standing by the road, while one of their friends was brutally slipping the clutch and overrevving the bike. I knew my brother wanted to sell it because he wants a new 4-stroke, so I figured I'd be polite and talk it up to them. After all, money's money.

After shooting the breeze with them about quads, crotchrockets and the like, I discovered these guys were not too savvy when it comes to motorsports. To say the least, but the kid decided he wanted to buy the banshee. At this point, he had been riding it for about 15 minutes, if you could call it riding, before I finally convinced my brother to make him shut it down.

While my brother scavanged for all his old spare parts, I asked this kid where he planned on riding it. Seeing that he was from the local metropolis and lived in a downtown neighborhood, I expected him to say 'oh, my grandma has land in michigan' or something like that. But nope, he said "Oh me and my buddies are gonna ride this thing up and down the neighborhood streets til like two in the morning." And I just left it at that.

Then I asked him how he was going to get it home, seeing that they drove a grand prix to our house, and he said that he expected us to deliver it. As my mom says, my brother would give the farm away, and of course he had volunteered me to be the delivery guy. So, after he paid (ripped off) my brother $2,400 in twenties, fives and ones, we loaded it up and drove an hour and a half to the inner city.

Once we got to his house, I left the truck running while my brother and i hurriedly unloaded the quad. No sooner than I slammed the tailgate this kid jumped on the bike, kicked it and took off screaming down the road. I looked at my brother and said "let's get out of here" and we booked. As we were crossing the last street to get out of the hood, this kid comes flying across in front of us and locks the bike up. At this point I'm thinking it's his dumba$$ problem that he doesn't know how to ride the thing so let's book. Well my brother, nice guy that he is, says "wait, let's go see what the problem is, he probably just stalled it." Right.

So my foolish brother gets out of the truck and walks over to this moron who's complaining that my brother better fix this thing because he spent so much money on it. My brother comes to discover that the bike is actually locked in second gear. So I tried telling the kid that he rode it at our house with no problems, and then he gets on it without letting it warm up, takes off slamming the gears, slipping the clutch and overrevving the engine on asphalt and overheated the clutch. Well, he didn't buy it. We ended up pushing the quad to his front yard where I continued to argue with him, his five friends, his big fat mother and some other family members. After coming to the conclusion that I didn't want this drug dealer to try anything, I finally told my brother to concede and just take the bike back and give him his money back.

So we loaded up the bike and drove home, with four stupid people in a brand new Mercedes SUV from the hood in tow. My brother told the kid he was keeping $100 because the kid essentially took the bike for a brutal, extended test ride and locked up the transmission. And that was it. Some saturday night.
Hopefully my brother learned his lesson.

After some inspection, we discovered that there is an actuator rod that connects to the actuator lever that came dislodged inside the clutch case. I still believe that it should have been the punk's problem. The receipt says "as is," and we had gone through the trouble of delivering it for him.
So, if you can't work on it and don't know how to ride it, don't buy it. And beware who you sell your bike too, it could come back to haunt you.

The buyers didn't come back to haunt your brother, he did that one himself.

i think the only thing more frustrating than that is when you go to test drive something and you dont know its a piece, you leave the area like a "white man" and something breaks. then all of a sudden its ur fault because you were driving. my niebour(?) accross the street did this to another fellow(we'll call him jim cuz i dont know the drivers name). my niebour(?) had a 4runner and beet the hell out of it. he broke something in the trannie (standard), the diffs were dead and the clutch was blown. so basicaly the whole drive train was shot. so he was going to sell it. he offered it to be but i told him that i wouldnt poke that truck never mind drive it. so he got angry and told me that there was nothing wrong with the truck, (but you see, he biched to me about how his trannie would not shift out of 1st). so this guy takes it OUT OF HIS DRIVEWAY and all you here is grgrgrrgrgrgrgrgrrgrgrgrgrgrgrgrgrklunk. blew first gear and did a good job of it to. my niebour(?) threatened to take him to court so they guy ended up buying it for $500 just to shut him up. it was great because i was in my driveway changing the oil in my quad.
