What is the origin of the throttle lever?
#1
Someone asked me recently why quads have a throttle lever next to the right hand grip instead of just twisting the hand grip throttle like on a dirt bike. I had no answer. If quads are a "spin-off" of dirt bikes why this small difference? Or were they trying to copy snowmobiles when they first made quads?

It's hard to say. But I know one guy who switched to a twist for a few minutes. Back on went the thumb throttle. And he comes from a MX MC background. The problem is that an MC is moving on one axis. The bike rotates front and back (like a teeter totter, or an oil well pump). It's not that difficult to control the throttle with that motion. With an atv, the vehicle adds a second axis that runs longitudally front to rear through the center of the bike. This is the left-right rocking motion. When the bike rocks, it can cause unwanted movement in the throttle. And abrupt throttle applicant in a situation where the bike isn't in a good position can be very bad. Not that it can't happen with a thumb throttle.
I think you also need a better grip, with your arm in an optimal position at all times. With a twist, you wrist could easily turn where you aren't able to use as much strength to control the atv. Hard to say.
Some of it comes down to preference. Many of the pro racers run twists. I know my thumb will be cramped if I'm riding hard a lot.
