i wouldnt say "natural jumps" are better
but using "natural resources" is prolly ur best bet....
dirt is just perfect for jumps...get a bunch of it and a bull dozer and you'll be set..you cant make a 15 foot wide table top with a wood ramp and a whopps section with wood lol
i'd say for ur own safty stick with dirt...you can get plenty of air if you put a big enough and steep enough lip on a kicker

here is a site with some freestyle ramps, but you have to pay for the plans. there is a free site out there somewhere. google it.

and dirt jumps have their downfalls as well. after a good day rippin' on them they start to get grooves in them or get tore up. they also are a pain to build if you don't have a dozer or a decent sized tractor or if you don't have any dirt. yeah, you can just push a pile a dirt together but that starts to leave low spots where water will collect and diggin' holes to get dirt is kinda dangerous for people who will be riding around the holes.
we were looking to build a ramp because it saves dirt, the jump is movable and usually a metal ramp won't change much on ya. but that is just my opinion and whatever you decide to go with, i hope it works out.
