I have a honda threewheeler and I ride it very hard at slow speeds in creeks. my atc is air cooled so it can not get much air when i am fooling around in the sand. I was wondering if there is any way that I could rig up some homemade thermometer that would be able to read from my dash the temp of my moter. I was thinking of something that has a meter on the top which would mount to the dash and a wire leadig to a cesor which would be fastened on to the moter and when it gets to a certain temp i would shut if off and let it cool down.
ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED. ALso what is the safe running temps of a 4 stroke engine

Hey King,

Please refresh my memory on what is too hot. Best as I can remember, oil temp should never exceed about 220 degrees.

Sound right?

I tried the meat thermometer thing on the wifes 200 fourtrax. After rideing for about an hour i took off the oil cap (the one on the side cover where you put oil in)and put the probe in the oil.I read about this in dirtwheels or in the old forum. You might want to use a canning thermometer instead of on for meat to get a truer reading. The one for canning is made for liqiud.I hear that the temp should be around200,220.....Bob
