What Cold Start Methods
#1
Like it says,
Guys.....What Cold Start Methods do you use on your cold blooded machines(ATV's, lawn-tractors, ect) ......and what if any preventive measures do you take beforehand.
Example: Putting a light bulb near the quads engine to keep warm
thanks

Hey, been cold there like here? Was a high of -12 today.
Most of the newer quads, have a cv carb. CV carbs cant use a real choke plate, and instead they use an enrichener circuit. The enrichener circuit just doesnt work as effectively as a real choke does. My solution, is use a mitten, or some duct tape, and close off the snorkle going to the air box, by about 90%. This works like a real choke plate, and gives alot of vacumn to the carb circuits, and really sends the mixture ratios high.
Try it....youll like it.

Put some Sea Foam in the gas tank to prevent gas line freeze, and it help to keep the fuel system clean to and that helps with starts.

Every machine is different, and some have their own special procedures (like my CRF450) to get started, but on most machines I find that pumping the throttle a few times, and then crank it over with NO throttle until it fires works.
When we have ridden in the really cold weather, there have been a few times we have parked a quad in front of a kerosene heater to warm it up a bit and that works.
And of course, if nothing else, bump starting them will usually do the trick every time.
BTW, make sure to let it warm up around idle RPM's, high revs on a cold engine is a no no.
