I live on a tangle of dirt roads which holds a disorganized (thank God) cluster of perhaps 70 or 80 homes. The houses are nicely spaced apart, and most people are very much country folk - friendly and helpful but not at all nosey or pushy. The neighborhood is surrounded by literally hundreds of miles of open high-desert trails on 3 sides. There are plenty of ATVs in the neighborhood and plenty of youngsters riding them not only out in the desert, but illegally on the "roads" too. People in more uptight places would just FREAK... OH, My GOD! They're UNLICENSED!! Such a DANGER!! With country folk, it all seems to work out - and I like it just that way.

There is one little elementary-school sized fella who is constantly bopping around by himself on an adult-sized sport quad - it is really too too big for him. Most folks kinda cringe & wish his parents would put him on something better-suited but he is well-behaved, polite, and friendly. At least he knows to always wear a helmet and get outta the way of cars (that's more than I do, honestly).

The little smiling man on the too-big machine did a fine thing a few days ago. Out in the desert between the sagebrush off the side of the trail he spotted someone on the ground. He went to look and found an injured, unconscious woman. Bugger went straight home and brought his parents out to see. It turned out to be a woman who was thrown from her horse - and kicked around some, too. The ambulance came and off to the hospital she went.

It's easy to get feelin' all down on kids sometimes ... but this one SO young kept his head and did exactly the right thing. Wrong size or not, if he hadn't been out there she truthfully may have died. Who is the danger here? Hell, HE ain't the one that fell off.

Sharp kid, lucky lady. God bless 'em both.

Heh, always nice to hear a story like that, and it may not be in his best interest to be on a big quad, but if hes not hurting anyone and hes respectful of it and others around him i really see no problem with it. and Im glad to hear shes alright, its a good thing he noticed her and he handled himself so well, two thumbs up for the little guy
