Default How many still ride without a helmet?

I am 30 years old and have just bought my first helmet. I have been riding Atvs since I was 8. Most of the guys I ride with don't use them, so I never put much thought into it. Last weekend I got slammed into the ground, very hard. When I approach a ramp, I gave it some throttle to get the front up and it went to the right a little. Which caused me to land hard on the left side, launching me head first into the dirt. I hit the ground hard enough to knock the wind out of me and leave me slightly disoriented. Afterwards I thought if there had been a rock or any thing hard, that it could have been really bad. After 22 years of riding it took this to make me get a helmet. I am well known to learn things the hard way. At this point I don't care how cool I am, i wanna live.

How many still ride without a helmet? Hopefully my experience will cause at least one person to think about getting one.

Towing trailers around the yard and plowing the driveway are the only times I don't use one.
90% of the guys/gals I ride with wear helmets, if not more riding gear (gloves, pants, boots). Kinda makes us feel like pro, not some half cut redneck yahoos we usually are. lol.
Slipping on the helmet and gloves is like poppin' a fresh mag in and pullin' back the slide on your .45 ....
Everyone knows you mean business.

Around here you are considered un cool if you ride without a helmet (no offence) plus I think the looks of helmets now a days a wicked. When we stop for riding breaks I leav mine on, because i kinda like to show it off. lol

IMO (And I'm glad you saw the light to wear one before you got hurt too bad) Unless you are working a farm at slow speeds, perhaps pulling trailers and plows around, (Even then it is adviseable) you should always have a helmet on. Forget if it's law or not, if you are operating one of these without a helmet you are a complete jackass. Sorry to be so harsh, but without a helmet a slow speed rollover can end your life....not just the big dramatic crashes.

Wear the brain bucket!!!

I am one of those idiots that still does not wear a helment. I am 34 and about to order my first one though. I am fairly new to 4wheeler riding and considered myself pretty much a hill sissy. :-) Some of the guys I ride with heard me telling someone I don't like hills and they just laughed and said they got a bit nervous following me because I would go up just about any hill.

That tells me it is definately past time for me to get a helment. No the problem is finding one that fits right. So far it looks like it is going to take a freakin XXL for my melon head. Hard to find too many in stock that darn big where I live.

And noone I ride with wears helments except the kids. My wife has one but wont wear it because no-one else does. She said she will when I start wearing mine. Too darn hard headed for our own good I am sure. I consider myself lucky to have not gotten hurt.
