Default Gas price gouging bill

Not sure if it'll work but click the link below and sign the petition.

Dear MoveOn member,

As of yesterday, gas prices are the highest in U.S. history - we just passed the 1981 record, even adjusted for inflation.1 Prices could reach $4.00 per gallon in parts of the country, just in time to crimp summer vacation plans. As consumers suffer, the oil industry continues to reap the windfall - breaking profit records on an almost quarterly basis. It's outrageous!

Enough is enough. Hearings start today on H.R. 1252, a House bill that would make gas price gouging a federal crime, punishable by 10 years in prison. Speaker Pelosi has said she'll move the bill to a vote this week - if there's the two-thirds majority required to fast track the bill through the process.2

Oil company lobbyists are frantically trying to stop the bill. Your representative needs to hear from you today. Will you sign our petition asking Congress to pass the price-gouging bill - and then send it to your friends?

"Gasoline price gouging should be made a federal crime before the summer price increases hurt more American families."

Rep Bart Stupak (D-MI), sponsor of the House bill said this of his motivation to introduce the legislation:

"In April ... crude oil was $7 a barrel cheaper than last year (but) gas prices were almost 50 cents a gallon higher. Clearly there's more at play than simply the world crude oil market."3

In April, more than two-thirds of Americans reported that their gas bills were causing financial crunches, with a full third saying it was having a "serious" impact on their families.4

That same month, the top two US companies, Exxon-Mobil and Chevron-Texaco, announced a combined $14 billion in first quarter profits.5

It seems like even the oil industry has gone too far this time, and it's time to balance the scales. The Senate passed a price-gouging measure out of committee last week, and the House bill now has over 100 co-sponsors from both sides of the aisle.

The oil industry is nervous. They've sent their lobbyists to the Hill in full force to stop - or at least weaken - these bills, and they're pulling out all the stops. The American Petroleum Institute, an industry front group of more than 400 oil and gas companies, even threatened that new laws could increase gas prices more.6

Enough is enough. This summer, we can stop Big Oil from profiting at the expense of American families. Can you sign the petition to ask your representative to make gasoline a price gouging a federal crime now?

Don't forget to pass it on to your friends - this week is an historic opportunity to send Big Oil a message that we've had enough.

Thanks for all you do

Moveon.org is evil.
America has some of the cheapest gas prices in the industrialized world.
There aren't just a few "Big Oil" companies that sell gas.
Oil companies have a lower mark up than fast food.

Only in a nation where most of the people we define as poor have microwaves, air conditioning, 1-2 cars, color TV screens, video game system, and lottery tickets could people possibly come up with a petition such as this. Thanks George Soros... Please search for info about Soro's childhood travelling around european countyside with an SS officer... You can find it in his auto-biography.

Way to stick up for Big Oil...they need people like you to survive.....wouldn't want them to run out of business

It must be that many are out of touch.....

Only a moron would compare the USA to other countries who have much better mass transit systems in place than the average American has access to.

I'll Side With pimp Smurf.. Its BS that fuel Costs so much.. But try buyin it somewhere else.. Driving is a priveledge not a right. Try riding a bicycle or sompin if you can't afford the fuel.. Drive a more economical car. move closer to your job. there are a million alternatives.. You wanna impact big oil. Drive a car that gets better mileage and drive less.. Thats how you affect big oil. As long as everyone drives their gas guzzling monster trucks Wich burn up tires and use more motor oil and fuel than a smaller vehicle. they get you by the *****. Its really not the governments place to step in. Other than to tell the cheap bastards to build some more efficient refineries to keep up with demand. The cost differntial between crude and the refined product is insainly high.

I dont have a problem with companys making money.
But when big oil has quartely profits in the billions, while the working man has trouble getting gas money to get to work, That is nothing but greed and is dead wrong. Period.

If everyone would simply drive 5-10 mph slower every time they got in their car/truck. They would save a decent amount of money and have a impact on prices also. Instead we just complain.

There was no gas because of price limitations. Gas station owners couldn't order new gas BECAUSE they weren't allowed to increase thier price to the point that they could afford to. This is "price gouging". Right before katrina, normal gas frieghters were NOT going down there for fear of being caught in the storm. Specialist (who charge must more) would go, but many gas stations (unable to raise thier price because of gouging bills) couldn't afford to simply lose money by buying more gas and selling at a lose, so they didn't buy gas until WAY after the storm left.

Profits are NOTHING. You have to look at the profit margin. If a company makes $1000 in a quarter, but they had to spend $900 to make that $1000, then they have a 10% profit margin. Fast food does about 9%, oil companies do about 8.5%. Now think about the MASIVE amount of money that oil companies have to spend BEFORE they even start to pump the very first gallon of crude oil out of the ground. Think about the hundreds of millions of dollars they spend on a single oil platform and the drilling involved before pumping a $60-70 barrel of oil out of the ground.... They spend huge amounts of money, to make a 8.5% profit... Is this a business you would want to get into?

Exxon is considered to be a "Big Oil" company, but they only produce 3-4% of the worlds oil......

EDIT: Just did the math. If "Big Oil" took all of the profits and split it up between 200 million people (probably more drivers/cars in america than that) it would give us about 23 gallons of gas each... Would that really affect your life in any measurable way? Unfortunately, it would make my IRA go down in value. If you have an IRA or 401k or other investment plan, "Big Oil" "price gouging" legislation will reduce the value of your retirement investments. Of course if you are a liberal, unemployed college student, then you think that is the government's job also...
