i also carry the $10 pump from wally world, i have aired up 25" tires and 29" tires with it. fortunatly they have not been on any of our bikes. the $10 one at wolly world works pretty good, it woun't fill a tire in a blast, so wrap you a ratchet strap (also carried in my tool box), around the tire, sit back, shoot the bull for 5 min or so, and wait to hear the POP of the bead!! i'd say it's worth the $10 if it can air up a 29.5" outlaw (which it has). i also carry 2 bottles of slime as well, just in case!!

there's a long list of trail tools i carry but the air pump and the tire kit are handy. i got the tire kit from wally world as well, it's the one that includes a yellow box. when i bought it, it was $6.00 but that was 7-8 months ago so it's probably more now!!

 

Which will put out more air. The small foot pump or a $10 compressor that runs off your battery?

 

I'm not a phizzamatist, but I don't think it's a matter of "more"....

You'll get the same "amount" of air out of your foot and your compressor.

You'll just get it _faster_ out of the compressor.

Only thing I see is if your battery is dead, then so are you [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif[/img]

You might run out of stamina with a foot pump, but you
can rest a few minutes, finish the job, and you'll still have
a charged battery! <snicker>

I carry a 12v car lighter compressor with me on my quad, but adding
a small bike pump might not be a bad idea either.

I carry a small 12 air compressor in my box along with a compression strap and other tire plugging tools. Never needed the plugs for my ATV but after bumping a log and knocking my bead off I was sure happy I had the compressor and compression strap out in the middle of nowhere.

 

I carry a 12 volt plug in compressor along with tire pulg kit...........With over 1600 miles each on two Sp 450's never needed to use it yet!!!!...........Caper.............

 

Kolpin makes a patch/inflator kit. It is a manual pump that is hollow with the plug kit inside. Fairly small with an endless supply of air. Bought mine at Cabelas. About 40$

 

resurecting an old thread here -

what about using engine compression? turn the gas off let the engine run out of fuel in the carb bowl, pull the spark plug - attach an air hose - crank the engine over until tire is full? (recoil starter would do it just fine too, but more work!)

I've seen these for motorcycles as a flat repair kit - why not on an ATV - too much pressure?

 

With the size and price of a 12 volt compressor ......WHY???...Storage space?....Not a issue for me....

bought the $10 air compressor from wal-mart and it fits perfect in the front storage box on my ac700. I also run with slime, which i haven't had any flats...yet.

 

I prefer simple and reliable if there's an option (do some way out in the woods stuff up here in AK)

- submerge your ride in a river miles from anyone and soak your compressor
- or have a bear trash your tool box and eat your compressor
- or have your power port quit working (could rewire around that one)
- or just simply have the compressor break ($10 walmart compressor doesn't inspire backcountry confidence in me personally)

nope - simple, reliable, and virtually foolproof is the way to go for what I do

electric compressor and CO2 units are not ideal (breakable and limited life respectively). I'd take the hand or foot pump someone mentioned, but a simple hose with some fittings (maybe a gauge) seems so much simpler than even that. Unless your engine lets go you'll be able to inflate - and if your engine does tank...you probably won't need tires anyway!

I'm wondering if there are any problems with the with the compression idea.

Fuel and oil are probably the biggest for me (old sportsman 2 stroke)....fuel I can shut off easy enough - oil pump is tougher, maybe put a shut off in the line (dangerous I know...what if you forget to turn it on!)
