Taking the younger kids for a spin
#1
When taking the little ones (mine are 2 & 6) out for spin on the machine, how do you ride with them?
I carry the 6 year old on the rear (with a seat bag and a tie down as a handle) or use my Kinex seat when its on. She seems fine and I just take it easy.
The question is, how do you safely ride with the real little ones. He loves to ride but is like a bottle head when moving. I don't go fast or for long trips and mostly just puddles and fun behind the house, but the wife give me grief because she thinks it's not safe. And Yes, he wears a helmet, but a hockey helmet is all that fits him. He's never fallen off or even slipped, but is there any other way? or am I just an idiot, like the wife says, for taking them out so young?

There really is no other place for a two year old other than in front of you so you can keep one arm around him at all times. Two is just too young to have any strength or ability to hold on by themselves. One arm riding means slow and easy - more of yard riding than trails. I've seen a harness that can strap the little one to your front (he's attached to you, not the bike) that would free you up a little, but the type of trails and the speed shouls still remain easy and slow.
Six can ride behind you - especially if there is something behind and beside her to help keep her in place. But a six year old can also ride in front. Here too, when carrying kids of that age, it's slow and easy riding.

FYI..... I know a guy who was riding his 3 year old son on the front of his Polaris 700.... the kid slipped off while on a slight off-camber and while trying to grab the falling kid the father accidentally stabbed the throttle........ the kid was sucked right under the rear wheels........ ran right over his chest......
Lucky for him little kids have soft bones so nothing was broken, but his face took a shot from the under-belly somewhere and ripped his bottom lip into about 20 stitches...... the kid was wearing an old football helmet because that was all that fit........
IMO the kid should not go on an ATV until he has the strength to hold on for himself..... or better yet ride one himself........put him on an electric toy quad and see how he does himself and go from there......

Yeah I bet he was going fast. I taken my boy on quad alot in the front and ne never came close to falling off. He's now four and still rides in front. He holds onto the bars and I also hold onto them. He enjoys it that way. I pretend he is driving the machine. I love seeing he's huge smile when he rides in the deep puddles and I pretend to be scared It's great fun

i put them up front with my arm around them. i yard ride with them. i'll put some 2x4's and rocks in the yard to run over. i also put it in low range so the engine has a higher rpm without the speed. they think they're flying but only going 5 to 10 mph. they love it.

Even at 5 mph you'll never be able to contain you composure to stop in that kind of event. It's a risk. Not sayn don't givem' a ride. I've given my 2yr old a ride.

I ahe a 5yr old boy and 2yr old girl. They go riding all the time. If I take both, son sits behind me and little girl in front. I stay in the 10mph range, but have opened it up to 30 in the straight and flats, only for a second... usually as my son/daughter are yelling "faster daddy".....
i have taken my sone on a 30 mile trail ride where he sits in front of me, grasping my pants. we never get about 15 on the trail

Boy fell off the bike yesterday.
Good thing he had his helmet on (well trained!!)........he was in the garage playing around on them (not running) and must have had a poor dismount!!
