The 2009 Yamaha ATV's have already been anounced. The Grizzly 450 is still in production, and they introduced a new Grizzly 550EFI. They did axe the Grizzly 400, but NOT due to any tranny problems, just due to the fact that the 450 & 350 were overall better choices.
I have been hearing the 800 Grizzly rumour for quite a few years now. Whether Yamaha will or will not release such a machine is unknown.

To the OP, how big is this bag of camping gear? How heavy? Can you carry it on your back? If you are basing your purchase on that bag of gear, then we need to know more specifics.

I'd get something with fuel injection. i have a 420 rancher and it will move for such a small displacement atv..tops out right around 60 too. it has loads of torque in the lower RPM's and loves to rev. my next quad will deff be a honda rincon 700 FI or grizzly 700FI...i love fuel injection!

I highly recommend a Can-Am Outlander 500 FI. It's a great quad, and it has a V-Twin (2 cylinders) engine. They make more power than the competition (go to a dealer and look at the dyno tests in the brochures), and with 2 cylinders pumping instead of just 1 you put less stress on vital engine components, which will give you a longer lasting with less maintenance quad. Twin cylinders are the future, singles are the past.
With the Outlander, you can get the XT and/or the Max package with it. The XT package adds a front winch, steel bumpers, and a few other features (one of them being the ability of the dark green color). The Max package makes it into a "REAL" two up, since both riders are placed in front of the rear axle. It is a long wheelbase version.
You can get the storage boxes/bags ordered directly from Can-Am. We have the plastic rear one, no complaints.
Also, all Can-Am models come with a 3 year warranty (vs 6 months from most other ATV manufacturers).
Do I sound biased? It's cause I am! My Dad's 800 Outlander Max XT is a great ATV!

if you are looking for something more on the sport side of the fence as you put it and are in the market for a 500cc machine you might want to look at the polaris scrambler as it is a sport looking quad with 4x4 and you can order cargo racks for the back and or front of it to haul your camping gear.

Twin cylinder engines have almost twice as many moving parts. I'm not sure that makes it longer-lasting and less maintenance. Time will tell.
