Default Protective wear against exhaust?

The other day the fam and I were out riding, and the gf burnt herself on her exhaust pretty bad. (large 2nd degree burn, will most likely scar) This seems to have become a problem with both her and my son. The fact that the exhaust is hot, alone isn't incentive enough to stay off of it. Telling her "well, I know it's hot, don't touch it" gets similar results to waking her up at 3am on a Saturday morning. My son and her are both beginning riders, these are their first ATVs, ever.

We ride mainly on the weekends, for an hour or two at best, so there hasn't been the need to get full riding gear for everyone. Helmets, gloves, jeans, and rugged shoes if they don't have boots, is generally what is worn.

So my question is this.. Is there a boot, or leg protectors that I can get for them so their riding experience is a lil more burn proof? I have been encouraging them to ride more, since it can be a fun thing we can all do together. The occasional burn can be a real turd in the punchbowl for a something that was intended to be fun. What both of them (the gf and son) do not like about the typical riding boot, is the limited, or no, ankle movement. This makes it difficult for them to shift.

Advice, anyone?

I have to say i cant wear riding boots either because i cant feel the shifter or move my ankles. I just wear a pair of danners and use riding pants. the pants will protect them from the burns and they still have the comfort of their normal boots. If your riding in mountainous areas chin\knee guards might help from sticks kicking up but you probably dont need them cause its pretty rare that happens.

You have to break them in....... I used to say the same thing about not being able to shift or work the rear brake well with riding boots..... but since I took the time to break the boots in and rode with them for a while, there is no way I would go back to work boots again......

Take a look at the Fly Stinger 3/4 ATV boot... they are only 3-buckle and not 4-buckle like full MX boots, but they have all the protection and when the break in they are excellent........

I like riding boots better now because they are so quick to take on/off with the buckles.... no messing with laces that are caked in mud.....

My wife doesn't like riding boots either. But I think the style of riding you're going to do would determine if you need an actual riding boot, or just a pair of Red Wings.

Having broke my ankles more than enough times (not riding) I'll take the riding boots. Plus I tend to be a little more on the aggressive side of the riding style. The wife tends to putt around, and go through the occasional mud hole.

I definitely recommend at least a 3/4 boot.

And also depending on what style of quad you have, the riding boot may be a better choice. I have nerfs on mine, so I've had sticks flip up and stab through the netting. The full riding boot has saved me once for sure, as the stick was lodged up my pant leg.

If you have floorboards, that wouldn't be as much as an issue.

Bottom line is they probably won't ride if they're uncomfortable, but try to put them in something besides tennis shoes or sandals.
