Default Garmin Nuvi 500 owners. WARNING

As many of you know I purchased a Garmin Nuvi 500 GPS because it can be used with Topographic maps in addition to street mapping. DO NOT purchase the updates. If you do the Topo maps cannot work at the same time as the street maps. After I recently updated my gps after signing up for lifetime updates my topographic lines disappeared! I called Garmin's customer support and the gentleman there told me I needed to download the Topo maps seperately and add them. After I asked him if they would still work together I was told they would. He didn't tell me I would need to purchase a micro SD card as it would need more memory. I bought another card, installed it, and downloaded the Topo maps to my gps. Guess what? They don't work together. I have to turn off street maps to view the Topo maps. Called them back and guess what? They knew this is an issue. Their solution was to turn off the street update to view the Topo instead of the way the unit was designed to work with both working together. So, if you have a NUVI 500 don't waste your money buying the update or lifetime update. When all is said and done I will have spent over 8 hours on downloads and phone time just to have the original maps reinstalled so I can use both again.

I love the thing otherwise. How many gps units will give you topo maps while driving to your destination? They're going to have to burn a CD with the original mapping and then I'll have to delete the files on my GPS and install the ones from the CD. At least they refunded the Lifetime Update fee.
