Making own ramps
#2
I too have a Ranger! and I also made my own ramps. I don't know how long they are, I just measured the bed, cut a 6"x1" wood ramp to the right length, added a 3"x1.5" under it (to make sure it won't collapse when I'm on top). Put one bolt at the end so I attach it to the gate (it won't slip under my wheels)...and it works great, doesn't bend...it's surprisingly tough (I climb on it on the shee (400+150lbs)).
The length is th elength of the bed, so I'm sure I just dump it in, close the gate and go. It's not that steep either. I've been surprised to see how well everything went with these 1 hour made ramps...

I got 2x10's and cut them 8 feet long because that is the lenght of my bed on my Chevy C1500 and I bought ramp arts ramp end that are made out of aluminum and they bolt on the end of the board and the ramp lays on the tailgate and I have had no problem with them. My blaster hardly flexes them and my dad's quadrunner 250 does not flex them much more.

well i figure i'll be the black sheep here b/c i don't own a ranger but i have built my own ramps or should i say i designed them but someone else put them together. they are built out of muffler tubing with a 3"x3" cattle panel surface. now they do weigh close to three times as much as the aluminum ramps but support my quad (648 lb) and myself (350 lb) without flex. they are basically a copy of the aluminum version as far as length and width. if ya want i can give you measurements and weight.

Step 1
Go to Wal-Mart, buy a ramp kit. Around $20-30 depending on what your store has in stock. This will be located near the floor jacks etc in the automotive section.
Step 2
Buy a 10"x2" board and cut it into the length of your bed (allowing space for the ramp ends,) for many this will be about 6'.
Step 3
Using the Ramp kit, bolt the ramp ends on, and thats about it.
Step 4 (Optional)
Add something on top of the ramps for traction - I used 2x1's and screwed them to my ramps about every 12" or so.
All total it took me 60 minutes, mostly because I had to use a hand saw since I didn't have access to a power saw.

I had my own ramps.. they are made of wood and the addon cleats on the end that you buy at a hardware store.
I hated them... always worried I was going to drive off of them etc.
I ordered some Tri-fold aluminum ramps from RockymoutainATV.com and love them!

I, too, considered making my own ramps, UNTIL Isaw the bi-fold steel ramp in Sportsmansguide. It is on the small side, but my Foreman loads easily on it. Measures 72"X45" open, weighs 39lbs. COST=$61.00 to my door! Couldn't make a ramp for that, if you considered your "spare" time worth even $5.00/hr.! Think about it. This ramp would be TOO SHORT if you own a lifted truck. Mine is a std. 2WD 96 Ford F-150, the ramp works GREAT!!

Go the Wal-mart route. Mine had some hooks on the bottom of the ramp kit to secure it to the bed, plus the mounts are rubber coated. I made the total length of the ramps right at about 6 feet long and they fit my 4x4 Ranger excellent. Total investment of about $27 and 1/2 hour.

Another one for you. Go to Walmart and but the 16 ft extension ladder for $35.oo. Go to Home Depot or Lowes and get a sheet of 1/2 inch OSB for $6.oo. Get some 1 1/2 conduit clamps for about .20 cents each. Separate the ladder halves. Saw the board length wise to fit in between the rails of the ladder. Use the clamps to attach the board to the ladder halves. You now have a ramp that is 8 feet long, but it can be cut down. It will support a SP500 and rider plus all the gear that is packed on it. Probably close to another 120 pounds. So with ATV + rider + gear = 1050 lbs give or take a couple. Works real good. And it's lightweight.

I also went with the build your own type setup. I purchased a InstaRamp kit from Home Depot, some 2x8x8 treated boards. The kit is nice and has a steel upper section and a molded rubber lower section.
I used to have the ramparts a few years ago and they bailed when I was riding up. This time I took some 1/8 rubber coated cable and made straps that connect to the top of the ramp and run up to the front of the bed and hook into the hold downs. They can't fall off the tailgate now and are easily removed using a 3/16 quick link. Drilling holes for cheap ramps into an expensive truck wasn't even an option here
The InstaRamps also seem to have a larger section that rests on the tailgate if I remember the ramparts correctly.
