I can not understand why people wouldn't wear helmets. Why put your life at a possible risk like that. I can understand if your just goin somewhere real short and are gonna going at low speeds, but any other time is just stupid.

I'm an ICU R.N. at a major hospital in Cleveland, and I've seen the damage from ATV's, cars, bullets, sports, God knows what else. People tell their stories about accidents and how they happened. I'ts unfortunate. However you'll notice in most of these fatal stories that riders were being stupid, riding two people, going up hills too steep, or RIDING WITHOUT A HELMET!!!! I also feel that unless you work in a hospital have experienced first-hand the consequences of not using your brain, you really can't appreciate the devastation of being paralyzed or maimed for life.
We all know how much fun it is to ride. I'ts a shame that those who can't use their brain give the blood-sucking media and over-protective mothers something to cry to the world about while ruining life for themselves and giving ATV's a bad name.
Fact is,any one of us could be killed tomorrow while driving to work, going across the street, or parachuting out of an airplane! All you can do is use the brain god gave you and enjoy life doing whatever it is you like to do.(like ridin').
Yes, I wear all the protective gear I can.Yes, I use my brain and don't try to go over my abilities. Yes, I wear a helmet. And yes. I ride an ATV and could be dead or maimed by doing so. If that's the case, then so be it, I'm trying to enjoy life here! I just wish eveyone would do the same without pointing fingers.
p.s. (can't wait to get jiggy with it this weekend in cochranton). '99 400ex.

There was a 13 year old boy killed a few days ago in Jewett,Oh. His father was riding on the back and was 3 times the legal blood alcohol limit. They were attempting to climb a steep hill and the quad flipped backwards. The father was able to get off, but his son was not so lucky. It seems to me that every time that I hear of a fatality on an ATV it involves alcohol, riding double, or not wearing a helmet. Everyone knows that there are risks associated with riding, why increase the odds of being injured or killed? I see people all the time with a cooler full of beer strapped to their bike with their wife on the back and no helmets. This is insane!! Why not wait to have the beer after the ride? If you want to take your wife, buy her a bike of her own. The fact that you should be wearing a helmet is a no-brainer(no pun intended). If everyone would ride within their means and keep these 3 things in mind, I think that we would see a huge reduction in mishaps.

Oster....I myself have a hard enough time trying to understand the crime and calamity, abuse and neglect that we human beings do to ourselves and others, quite often, for reasons that are simply unexplainable nor justifiable.
Yet, it's people like you, that are there to clean it up after the event.
You deserve a lot of credit, because there is no way, that I would even last a week at your job.
I think that what you said in your post, should hit home ...at least I hope it does...

My friend an I were blasting down an abandoned railroad bed. I was on my 87' Mojave, he was on an RM125. David was ahead of me, and didn't see a tree root sticking up. He hit it, and went over the bars. When he finally stopped sliding and rolling, he took off his helmet and found a flat spot worn in it. THAT could have been his HEAD!
Need I say more!!!!

Just a few days ago a 23 year old was killed while driving home on his atv. this guy was my friends cousin! I didn't know him that well but am sure I have met him before out on the trails. This was in an area that I ride in alot. The RCMP found him in a ditch in 6 inches of water. He was not wearing a helmet and alcohol is believed to be the cause. Even so if he had been wearing a helmet I think he might be here today.I learned first hand what a helmet can do for your brains, in two different occassions. I definitly know I will be wear mine from now on. If it can save mine it can save yours!!

In this house hold we have two quads. One for the wife and me.No kids(they are grown and on there own). But i do at times take other people rideing. My rules are.You wear a bucket. No booze or drugs. And do not ride double.Being stupid will get you hurt or dead.If the person i take with me doesent want to ride by MY rules i pull the keys and they sit and i ride.I went head with a guy once when i had my ATC185.Lucky neither of us were hurt real bad, we walked away. Most atv accidents i hear about are behind liquid power.Booze dont mix with anything.Just my 2cents......Thanks.BOB
