My quad's gold color aluminum wheels just don't look very good in my opinion. It really needs some polished aluminum wheels. In an effort to save some cash for other mods, I thought I might try to remove the gold anodize from the wheels and polish my own.

Have any of you ever tried this and if so, what did you use?

thanks,

I used Easy-Off oven cleaner to remove the anodizing from a set of wheels. I also used a Scotch Brite wheel in a drill to remove the anodizing, after letting the oven cleaner soak for a while and then finished cleaning with steel wool. It's a messy, time consuming process, but cheaper than a new set of rims.

Thanks guy.

I started on them this morning but ran out of oven cleaner. They aren't quite quite as shiny as Douglas rims (yet), but look a heck of a lot better than the gold that was on there.

you might find the need to sand the wheels down when you are done, I found when I did mine that the wheels slightly pitted from the steel wool

I found a polish called Simichrome that works quite well for cleaning up tarnished aluminum. It seems to do a little better job of bringing out the shine than Mothers did. It helped put a good shine on my wheels after I stripped the anodizing. Just a suggestion.

Witz:
Have you tried it on Diamond plate? Or do you think it would work OK for that? I want to clean up a fifth wheel tool box that I mounted on the upper rail of my trailer. Also, where did you find it?

Thanks for the info.

Find a local anodizing shop. They can take it off in just a couple of min's. It only cost me $5 per wheel, and it takes it all off without a trace. They were left with a smooth but dull look that was easily polished.

good luck....

I've never used it on diamond plate alumnium, but I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work. I picked the Simichrome up at my local shop, and I've also seen it at a couple dealers. It's in a little yellow tube.
