Default Emission levels for ATV's

We're getting alot of crap in our local newspaper from anti-ATV activists. I'm in the process of writing a rebuttal and need a little more information to shoot down the "ATV's pollute, rip up, destroy, and generally wreck everything on this earth" idiots. Does anyone know the emission levels put out by 4-wheelers or how they compare to cars? Or do you know where I could get this information? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I measured the exhaust levels of my 2001 Rubicon with the engine warm and it only produced 1.09% CO (carbon monoxide) and 212 ppm HC (parts per million hydro carbons) at an idle and 0.8% CO and 165 ppm HC at a cruise speed. This would pass a two speed type emissions test now implemented in many states. The maximun alowable levels in these types of tests is usually around 1.2% CO and 220 ppm HC. So, my 2001 Rubicon would have passed a two speed emission test for a 2001 passenger car.

novakaw650 They are probably refering to 2 strokes. 4 strokes burn a lot cleaner. But some folks gotta have that 2 stroke power.

The real culprits to our dirty air are buses, most specifically, school buses. Several hundred thousand operate everyday without even a hint of emissions control. Furthermore, research the commercial and off-road construction vehicle emissions. This info is finally available under the CAA (Clean Air Act) off the EPA.GOV website. Look at the number of vehicles, emission rates and hours in operation.

All of the cars, recreational boats, atvs and wood burning fireplaces in the US do not even add up to 1/10 the rate of emissions from the coal or diesel fire powerplants in the Southeastern US alone.

Do you think Russia, China or Japan and the third world require emissions control on thier vehicles or power plants? NO! They also have chemical plants that are not regulated (air, waste and water emissions). The VOLGA, TIBER, Euphrates, Nile and Siene (sp?) rivers are all so polluted that you cannot swim in them...forget drinking the water, unless you have a portable RO unit.

Again, the common man (us) footing the emissions bill for big business and free commerce with countries that do not care a whit about the environment or the mess we leave for the next gen.

It is sickening and unhealthy.
