Project with snowmobile a quad
#1
Clarkson University is playing with the idea of putting a ATV motor in a snowmobile for an SAE clean snowmobile comp. We need to make a cleaner and quiter snowmobmile, via emmissions and noise. under 600cc 2 stroke and 1000 cc 4 stroke. We are looking at quads with auto transmissions. Also playing with the idea of a manual and leaving it in like 5th gear (close 1-1) and also ideas of a supercharger system.
Please leave ideas here.

This is very interesting, I am in the process of trying to put a 550cc artic cat engine in a go cart/sand rail. I have the motor but I'm still trying to design a chassis. Has anyone seen or heard of anything like this? Looking for suggestions.
Thanks Steve

I agree the sled motor in the atv would be a much more interesting project. Most of the sled manufacturer's already have a 4 stroke sled.Take a 6 or 700 cc two stroker from a sled and your talking 100-120hp in stock form.If you can package the exhaust and get it clutched properly it would be awesome.Even a 500cc fan cooled motor puts out an easy 55-60 hp, thats more than even the big cc 4 stroker quad motors.

yeah, i agree with oldyeller. But can you imagine a 1000cc Arctic Cat Thunder Cat engine in a ATV? Now that would be awesome. 160HP+

Dooracer, do you want to enter the comp or win? Use a streetbike motor. Look for a HONDA RC51 1000cc v-twin. I assume you want to lock it in fourth, fifth should be overdriven, and use a variable belt transmission. It comes with fuel injection which you can tweak for better emissions. There is no quad engine which will produce the kind of horsepower required for a decent snowmobile. The belt tranny and track rob alot of power. Concentrate on keeping the weight down and you won't need to supercharge. If you really want to get into it, eliminate the gearbox and run off the crank or clutch shaft.

I live in colton ny,which is 15 miles from postdam, in this climate you should use a 4-stroke polaris sportsman 700 engine, change it to efi, and strap a turbo onto it. The engine already has an automatic transmission.Text
