Default Open Header?

I was out in tellico north carolina, and i saw (heard) a loud raptor, it was insane loud. he had what looked like a header that extended into a exhaust tip that you use on a truck to deepen the sound, and no muffler. has anyone ever seen this or heard of this? what are the benifits besides it being super cheap? do you need backpressure in a 4-wheeler? Im just wondering because it sounds like a cool idea.

2 things...."insane loud" gets riding areas shut down....if I understand you correctly, I'd say that he'll be pouring money into repairs on that engine....

So either way, it's not cheap or smart

Still if I'm understanding correctly...open headers wouldn't provide enough backpressure and you won't see any gains unless the engine is hopped up pretty good...and I don't think you could richen up the jetting enough to compensate for the open headers thus making it run extremely lean. On a car/truck unless the engine has some pretty good HP open headers will hurt your power more than help it....now if it has lots of oomph then the headers will be a benefit.

What you should do instead of wanting to mimic this setup is to find out who he is and then smack him upside the head for giving the enviro-whackos more ammunition!

Now, I could be completely off base with the explanation as to why he'd spend a lot of $$$.....but I'm spot on about "insane loud" getting riding areas shut down.

Having little to no backpressure on a stock or mildly modified motor can burn up your valves rear quick

Ya, open headers will make you trash valves faster (so I hear)

BTW, You can jet up enough to compensate for the extra flow its gives, because it wont really flow THAT much more, as long as the intake is still pritty bottled up. I couldnt see open headers ever making an engine jet over 200/205 main jets, as most modded quads never even make it that high
