studding tires for ice
#1
anyone have any radical ideas for studding tires for the ice? ive used screws, but would like to try something that would really hook up. like maybe snowmobile studs. i have a banshee and screws work ok for awhile, and seem to throw them out of tire or wear away to fast. anyone have any recommendations on the subject. thanks alot

One of the guys I ride with has a CR 500 with one of his tires studed with sled cleets. They are about 1/2" X 1" and have a rockwell hardness beyond anything you could possibley want to ride on. They are a little costly but his tire has lasted forever. AND TALK ABOUT HOOKING UP!!

thats really a thick stud. how did he install them by pushing them through the tire? i figured the tire would not be able to keep the stud from ripping a big hole in it. do you know who sells them? thanks

OK....
Get in touch with Western Power Sports ( out of Canada). You need what I was told is part # 12-2000 or 12-2001.
He couldn't remember which one. This is a cleet off a sled and comes with it's own 5/16" flat headed bolt ( the head is about the diameter of a quarter).
Make your holes with a 1/4" leather drill bit in a 1/2" Cap. drill motor. He was very firm on not useing a regular drill bit. He said it makes a heck of a mess with the tire. Use plenty of Loc-tite! You wouldn't want a 5/16" bolt getting to our tube.
If you need help ordering the parts, or building the tires themselfs, he said to give you his # and he ( for a VERY small donation) would make them for You. He works at a W.P.S. Distributer.
Good luck
