Default 2 stroke questions . . .

Hey. I know this is a really stupid question but do 2 strokes mx bikes/quads need reeds? Manufacturs just came up with reeds to make the powerband less brutal right? Im just wondering if they are really needed or not, if you dont run reeds can it mess up the bike/quad?

ALL 2strokes dont need reeds.Polaris 250-300s dont use them. But if the engine is desinged for them they need to be there.

2-stroke refers to the amount of times the piston needs to move up and down to complete 1 compression. 2 sroke engines need reeds because when the engine makes each compression the reeds open to let in a fuel/air mixture and then they close when the whole combustion process is taking place. if ur still confused go 2 macdizzy.com this site is all about 2 strokes

yep and during the exhuast stroke the pressure would send fuel backwards through the carb, thats why they have a tapper the reeds will only open one way with pressure aplied to both sides.

Piston port, Case Reed, Cylinder reed, rotary vavle are all forms of intake for a two stroke engine. Piston port uses the piston as a vavle to let the air fuel mixture in threw holes in the cylinder wall. There is a kit to convert pport to a reed intake, better fuel dissipation. This is old technology. Rotary valves were used on a lot of skidoo snowmobiles, it uses a valve to open and close the intake port. So NO two strokes do not need reeds unless they have a reed designed intake.

if u take the reeds out of a bike it probably wouldn't run but i wouldn't try to run it w/o reeds

If the engine is designed to have reeds you need to have them on there.

If you totally remove them it would not start. The reeds are designed to hold in the primary compression until the transfer ports open to allow the fuel to be "pushed into the cylinder". The port timing and piston design is different on non-reed motors. Reed type motors generally have better throttle response and better bottom end power (stock vs stock). By the way 3WF, the only stupid questions are the ones you never ask. Asking is part of learning. Don think the questions you ask are silly. You might get some dummies that make fun of it, but most are here to help and share info.Bubba
