motor sputtered then started revving
#1
i was just out riding my '88 trx310r and was going down the road and i noticed it started sputtering a lil bit..then it went a ways and started sputtering again...i pulled in the clutch and slowed down rolling w/ the clutch engaged...and it started revving up pretty high and i wasnt giving it any gas...so i pulled the tether killswitch and shut it off...i sat there for a moment wondering wtf was goin on...i tryed starting it and it started right up but was acten like it might die so i flipped the fuel lever to reserve. it ran fine all the way back... the gas tank doesnt look that low but will it do this if it starts to run out of fuel?

If the problem is actually what you think it is, that is, starving for fuel, the answer is yes. The engine is actually running lean on fuel while the air mix is the same as before. A severely lean condition such as that wiil cause the engine to increase RPMs. You can duplicate the effect in a mower or other gas powered tool by allowing its'
tank to run dry. Just for an instant the engine will run at high rpms before stopping.

I was flat-track practicing on my '87R last week when it did the same thing on a hard left-hand turn. The problem was just that-no fuel. Flipped to reserve and kept on roosting. There are three tabs?, dimples, whatever you want to call them, on the inside of the tank in the front. When your fuel level reaches the single bottom one below the two top ones, better be looking for the petcock!!!

quadracerin,
next time, you might try canting your carb about 45 degrees to the outside of the turns to help prevent cavitation during turns. Also the float level could be slightly low, causing the bowl level to be less that full to start with.
