I could really use some guidance on needle swapping in the Honda 450R. I know it can't be all that bad but right now I'm stumpped...
I just got the Duncan Fatboy4 full system put on and my HRC cam goes in 9/28, so I wanted to get my jetting pretty close so when I pick it up from getting the cam dropped in it'll be ready to roll. I have a KFX700 that I've jetted many times, so I figured that this would be easier, either it's not or I've gotten dumber??? I took the top of the carb off expecting to be able to swap the needle yet there's that linkage that works the slide, how in the heck do you change the needle on this beast. Is it done from the bottom or what, my dealer offered to jet it for me when the drop the cam in, but I want to know how to do this myself, for I'm sure the future holds more mods for the "R". I love this thing, and have heard they rip pretty good with exhaust and headwork done, so I'm sure over time there will be more jetting adventures for me. Sorry for rambling on, Thanks again. Mudfoot

what jet are you doing , the main jet or the slow/pilot jet. The 450r is a flat bottom carb, so take off the bottom of the carb and the needle should be right there. Not sure about the slow jet.

I really wish people would not post info if they are not sure if its correct.......
Under that top cap, the linkage is held on to the slide with a few screws, make sure you have a good proper sized screwdriver, you do not want to mess up the head of the screws. Once removed you flip it (the linkage) up and out of the way. I then reach in the back of the carb, push the slide up, and you can feel the needle in there. Just push it up fro the bottom of the slide. The linkage is what holds the needle in. Simpli lift it out, replace with ne needle, or after you moved the clip. Then reverse to replace.

Thanks KGB!!
I got it all squared away now. Currently running the HRC needle 3rd clip, stock pilot(48), and a 185 main, with the HRC lid and pro design filter. I'm running the Duncan Fatboy4 full system. I think I'll order a few extra of those two screws, they are pretty small & soft; definately want to use a good screwdriver when changing the needle. It started first kick after jetting, thats always a good feeling, and it sounds sweet nice & responsive .....phew. Later

Mud foot, another tip. Go to ao hardware store, or a fastner supply shop, get the screws in allen head stainless. I can't remember the thread count, but get the allen socket head style. Much easier to work with, and if they get buggered (they won't but just in case) you can always use the ol' vice grips on the head trick.
