how do REEDS work?

lol im trying to become more informed about performance stuff, i know i sound pretty lame asking this stuff but what do reeds do? where are they located? how do they work? any help woudl be appreciated

Basically, the reed cage is between the carb and cylinder. The reeds are thin pieces of material (metal, fiberglass, epoxy, carbonfiber, etc) that act as a valve. When the piston goes upward in a 2-stroke, it creates a vacumm in the crankcase. This vacumm causes air to flow into the crankcase. The higher pressure of the air in the carb causes the reeds to open and the air flows to the vacumm in the crankcase. As the piston comes back down, it pressurizes the crankcase. The reeds must now close to allow the pressure to build.
