I was changing cables on my Banshee and found that there are some sratches thru the black Teflon coating on the slides. It's not just wear. It looks like a few grains of sand got in there and scrathed it. There are only a couple on each slide. Should the slides be replaced? Should I tear down the head to see if there is piston/ sleeve damage? I have a Uni filter but the outer foam is about shot, and it doesn't seem to fit into the airbox well. I haven't ridden it in any sand so I know I didn't get it in there.
Thanks.

I would replace the slide, if for no other reason than to eliminate the slide from sticking open either fully or partially while riding

If you can actually feel the scratches with your fingernail, it might be a good idea to replace the slides. Some scratching is normal, although it looks awful.

You don't really need to take the head or cyl off to get a look at the pistons. Since you've already got the carbs off, just shine a flashlight on the pistons and take a look. If sand has scored the pistons, you'll be able to see it on the intake side of the piston. If they look fine, you can be reassured that all is well. If they are scored, then take the top end apart & check them more closely.

If you decide to replace the slides...Go down to the local Yamaha dealer and get a price... Your Jaw will drop to the floor when they tell you what the slides for stock carbs cost.

When I purchased my banshee new in 1996 the first thing I did was install a twist throttle. Upon sliding out the slides there were many scratches in them. Now almost 5 years later the bike is still running like a champ and has never had a rebuild after being ridden at least twice a week. If they are really deep...Change them. If not I wouldn't worry about it.

Grampa, do you still have the thumb throttle stuff? Please email me, I'm looking for a few missing parts on mine.

scratches are pretty normal and are ok. On slides that are chromed you have to change them when they start to flake. I have not seen the black coating you have but it sounds like a dry film lube that has been applied. I would just clean the carb and keep your air cleaner clean and not worry about unless it seams to want to hangup and stick.
