i have an 87 lt250r that wont start. yesterday i was riding it as about 1/2 throttle and it died. i was low on gas so i thought that i had run out but there was still some in the tank. today i put some gas in it and tried to start it but it wouldnt start so i changed the plug and it was covered in oil. i kicked it a few more times them i changed the plug and once again it was covered oil. with the new plug in i kicked some more and a few times it backfired like a gun. i hope one of you could tell me what is wrong with my quad. by the way about a month ago i got a new piston, rings, cylinder sleeve, and crank case. this is the only problem since.

Hiya,

It could be any number of things. Stuck reeds... Faulty ignition. Make sure you have spark by touching the electrode of your plug to the frame.

Put in a fresh plug... Stick it in 5th gear and pull in the clutch. Let someone pull you to about 30-35mph and see if it will pull start. It may just be that your cylinder is so flooded you can't kick it fast enough to get it to fire up.

It's so tough to diagnose a problem via a forum.

Sounds to me like the bike was flooded. let it sits for a couple of mins and then try it again. Sure enough the bum start will get it going. As for the gun sound my LT500 does that when i start it up.

The same thing happen to my buddy's removed the side cover and take off your stator, it is probably rusted to hell, use brillo or steel wool to get rid off al the rust, and check all off your points, good luck with it
