Default Mojave w/ 400Ex carbs ?!

I have seen someone on here talking about putting 400ex carbs on a mojave but can't seem to find the thread now that I am looking for it specifically. The stock carb on my Mojo is missing some linkage so I have to replace it but I have noticed that buying the stock carbs are pretty expensive vs. some of the alternatives. The 400ex's seemed pretty reasonable in price but I need to know what else is involved in the swap out. Also any info I can get on the dial-a-jet setup would be great as well. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Matt

i put one on my friends mojave. it will fit in the carb boot fine, you have to do away with the air box though. thats a good thing because it robs power. also you'll need a 300ex or 400ex throttle and cable or a twist set up for a 400ex. i ran a pvc air intake off the back out of 2" pvc, and snaked it around the left side of the shock into a K&N 300ex filter. that way you retain the low rpm throttle response. or you could just run a clamp on UNI off the carb, but low rpms will suffer. i ended up with a 180 main jet and 42 or 45 pilot(i think), and the needle clip 4 notches down. depending on what intake you run, your main jet will vary greatly. it has better throttle response than stock because of the accelerator pump and non CV design, and its more fun to ride. also runs stronger everywhere, mainly because of the air box being removed though. remember the stock carb is 34 and the 400ex is 35.5, so its not much bigger. check out cycleworksracing.net, he has carb kits and performance parts for mojaves.

Thanks for the info. I have actually heard since I posted this question that using a stock Motor with a 400 carb might actually be too rich and it was suggested to go with a 300. Any thoughts on this or maybe if I just go conservative on the 400 jets I could make out ok ?

no problems here with the 400 carb, you certainly could do the 300, but your topend may suffer. when you go to get the main jet right, don't worry about going too big or too small with what would "seem" right, just use the one that it runs strongest at and then do a plug chop. i thought the 180 was too big, but thats where it runs best.

Sounds good. I picked up a 400ex carb last night on e-bay for 37.00 and I think it even has the cables. Thanks again for the info.

hey bluechip...a 400ex carb is not a good choice for the mojave, the stock outflows it, also go to cycleworksracing .net and check out the Mikuni 36mm RS, it's a great carb and only $136, yes i have a dial a jet also, it works great, just get your carb set up right for it and it works great...just spin the **** and your jetted
