extra gas

A no-cost fuel caddy can be made from an empty one-quart plastic motor oil bottle. After you have used the oil and allowed the bottle to drain, rinse the bottle with a small amount of gasoline, then fill it with gasoline and screw the lid on securely. You now have a small, compact, easy-to-store container that can be carried almost anywhere on your quad.
Shortly after I got my Bayou 400, I conducted an experiment to determine how far I could go once I hit reserve. At a time when the fuel in my tank was very low, I strapped a one-gallon gas can to my rear cargo rack, headed into the woods about a mile from my house, and drove around until I stalled out for lack of fuel. Then I switched to reserve, zeroed my trip odometer, and drove around some more until I finally sputtered to a stop.
When I checked my odometer, it read 9.3 miles. After checking my odometer, I used the gas I had brought with me to return home.
My Bayou has a 2.0 Liter (0.53 gallon) reserve capacity. In round numbers, I managed to go about 9 miles on half of a gallon of gasoline. This means that a single emergency one-quart oil bottle filled with gas could save me a 4-1/2 walk.
You didn't say how much extra gas you planned to take with you, or how far you had intended to travel, but for emergency purposes the no-cost oil bottle (or two) filled gas, which can be easily carried in almost any quads storage box, is cheap insurance against a long walk back to the trail head.
