What kind of riding will you be doing most of the time? I ride mostly trails/woods, powerlines, around the yard and the occasional sand pit.
So I chose HMF based on the range they produce power. I believe ct gave a higher peak HP increase, but HMF had a good gain throughout the RPM range. It was also the smoothest looking powerband on the charts. CT's gains were more in the top end. I don't spend most of my time at a track, so I didn't pick that one.

In my opinion, removing the lid does give it more top. But it seems to take away from the low and mid power. It is the same way with my brother's 400 ex. I'd leave it on for the trails.

Oh yeah, don't forget to remove the snorkel extension. That does make it too restrictive. If you remove that and use an uni (or other high flow) filter I think you'll like it better with the lid on anyway. I use the uni because it's a foam filter and won't get ruined if it does get wet. If you oil them properly they are no more restrictive than a paper one and the oil will repel water as well as not damage the filter.
