What kind of mods do you have in mind? With my recon I think the best money I spent was on some good wheels and tires, looks like you've already got that done.

I had installed an FMF Megamax 2 slip-on exhaust and k&n filter, and honestly there was no noticable power gain. It sounded good and the k&n filter was beneficial because they're easy to maintain, but as far as actual speed increases go, there's not much to be had with the recon. Even if you do get more power, the gearing is so low that you still top out at 40 mph anyways.

If you're looking for better shocks, a cheap upgrade is 300ex shocks on the front. They're a little longer than the stock ones so it increases your ride height and suspension travel, as well as soaking up the bumps better. I think, not sure, but I think the rear shock from a 300ex will also work on the back of the recon. I think the shock on the recon are one of the worst things about it, they're really more like little pogo sticks than shocks. I bottomed mine out on jumps so hard that the quad rebounded and bounced back up off the ground when I landed sometimes. I'm really surprised I didn't trash the frame, a-arms, or ball joints from doing it. Guess they just weren't built for motocross.

Aside from what I just mentioned, I really don't think there's much else worth doing to a recon. They're fun little quads and they're definitely one of the toughest most reliable ones ever built, but it doesn't take long to outride one and end up wanting more. I would suggest that you don't put much money into it, instead save your money and when you're ready to move up to a bigger better machine you will have the money in your pocket instead of going down the drain like it would if it was invested in the recon. Right before I sold mine I got the engine rebuilt with a high compression piston and got a kevlar clutch put in, I bet it wasn't even a month after the new piston was broken in that I decided I was ready to step up, and started looking for a warrior or 300ex to trade. Lost about $600 on that deal.

Sounds like a good plan. I always said i'd never get rid of my recon, but after I took a warrior for a test ride I changed my mind. I can actually go through just as much or even more mud with the warrior than I could with the recon with mud tires.
