I've read that some of you guys experienced incorrectly adjusted throttles on your new 400ex's. I went dune riding this weekend and my 400 did not perform. I was getting outclimbed by a stock blaster. When my buddy was upshifting on his blaster from 2nd to 3rd, I was down shifting from 2nd to 1st. Something is wrong! It idled real smooth and didn't seem to be running rough, but I was realy lacking power. My stock warrior performed better on climbing. When I got home I found that my air filter was really dirty. If anyone thinks I may be experiencing throttle adjustment problem, please tell me how to correct it. I havn't found a shop manuel for my 400ex yet.

trx430ex, I appreciate your help on the throttle adjustment. I found your old comments on the subject. I know it may be frustrating to you to have to reply about it so much, but I'm new to this forum and didn't realize the info. was in here. I made the adjustment. My throttle was only opening 3/4's of the way. The adjustment at the thumb throttle was tightened all the way in!

Hello,

That's the way they all are! (2000 Models anyway)
I am the one that originally posted the problem and solution with the 400EX throttle cable. So far, all of the Y2K 400EX's I have heard about or had dealings with (except 1 or 2 that the dealer caught) have had the throttle problem. I have even heard of dealers denying that this problem exists and it is some sort of "internet rumor" sheesh, what closed minded idiots. Guess I started one of those "Urban Legends"

Mine was opening less than 75% when I found it.

Glad to have helped!

Gabe, then I owe you a thanks as well! Do you think this is a problem? I mean, can you tell a performance differenc? I've only got to ride it in the back yard in 1st and 2nd gear and I'm not sure. Do you think that it maybe is adjusted fine at 3/4 open? If not let me know you can tell a differenc.

How far up is the thing supposed to travel up? How much of it disappears? All of it except the needle, or is some of it still showing?

The whole slide will disappear only leaving the needle showing. If you look down into the carb, you will also see a butterfly that opens (like a car) along with the slide, it should be completely horizontal.

You should be able to push the slide up completely with your finger, this will show you how far it can go. If it is not opening all the way, you are not getting full throttle.

I noticed a huge performance difference when I adjusted mine. If you want to see my original message search for: ATTN: 400EX owners (in the Honda forum)

The reason I looked originally, was that I had spent some track time on a '99 model. About 9 months later I bought my '00 model. I was disappointed with the power after the break-in period. I had the air-cleaner off, inspecting it. I thought that would be a good time to check throttle adjustment (you can always hope), and sure enough mine was only opening about 1/2 way between half and 3/4 throttle. Any blockage of the throttle bore will cause a loss of flow, that's the whole principle of how the throttle works. I promptly adjusted it.

You will probably not notice a power increase in the low end, but in the mid - upper-mid and top, the difference is substantial. The engine will rev faster when the throttle is wicked from idle. The bike will "feel" a lot faster due to you having to get into the throttle less for the same amount of power, and having more "on tap". BTW mine was adjusted all the way in at the thumb as well.

See below for what the 400 can do in the dunes when the throttle is adjusted properly .

<a href="http://home.earthlink.net/~gellett/sahara.htm">Weekend at Little Sahara, OK</a>

Tell us how yours does when you get out and really ride it!

PS.. A stock 400EX puts out around 28HP. A warrior roughly 17 HP. You shouldn't be the one getting spanked here.

Is this one all 2000 models? If so, I think it is a "safety" feature of some sort. WHat do ya think?

Only thing I can figure is that they changed something on the production line, or maybe they are catching some "heat" from the govt. They probably figure that the rider that doesn't figure this out, probably doesn't need the extra power anyway. Works for me. I'd prefer not to go thru the late 80's again.

Gabe, I know i sound like a spank saying this, but I've got to give credit where credit is do. I checked out your Little Sahara pics and I must say, you are a mad man! I went to Sahara 3 times in '99 and that is bigger air than I ever saw there on a quad. Is your 400ex stock? Are you running paddles on the rear. I felt like my 400ex was having problems turning my sand sharks and that I may have been better off with my stock rear tires, but that is also why I opened this question in this forum.
