I am currently running a K&N without prefilter on my 400ex. Some of the posts I have read here lately have raised some questions:

If the K&N is cleaned, oiled and installed as directed, will it pass small particles of dirt without the prefilter?

How about with the prefilter?

Does the Uni filter or Pro flow do a better job of filtering than the K&N?

How do these two compare to the K&N when it comes to restricting the airflow?

I do have a powercore IV and jet kit so I do want more airflow than I had with the stock foam filter.

Thanks for the comments..

you hear alot of good and bad about both styles K&N and foam. I used to run a K&N but now changed to a foam pro flow. I do believe the foam filter does a better job but the K&N should be fine I would definately have an outerweares on it though.

A K&N will outflow a foam filter, and a K&N is better for stopping sand. A foam filter is better for stopping verry fine
dust, you know that %$#$&& cloud of dust you drive through when you follow someone. But foam are not recomended for sand.

Changing your oil removes crud that passed through your filter, K&N, or foam. That is whare the dirt ends up, in your oil. Not to mention fresh oil is a good thing!

I found that a Pro-Flow foam filter with an outerwear works great in the sand. Nothing gets through.

I read that somebody but some panty hose on it{K&N) and it doesn't restrict airflow.

The only problem I've had with the K&N is that because it traps dirt on the surface it tends to plug up real quick...Never had anything get by with it as long as it's on tight.

As far as I can tell the prefilter is just to help keep the big particles off the filter it doesn't catch smaller particles.
