Lt 500 conversion
#1
Let me tell you what I have. I bought a kx500 a few years ago and tried to enjoy riding a motorcycle. It didn't work. I have always been more of a fourwheeler man. I have owned a 87 Banshee when I was a kid and then later a 88 250r. I hated having just two wheels on the ground but LOVED the Power that the 500cc engine pumped out. I decided to put the engine into a fourwheeler chassis, and just recently purchased a 89 lt500 roller. I know what your thinking Why put a Kawasaki motor into a Suzuki that already came with a 500cc engine. You suzuki riders are going to hate me for this, but I have ridden several lt500's, and to tell you the truth, they just never did make the power that they should have. I don't mean to Bash Suzuki but that is the truth a far as I have seen. That aside, I have a couple of questions for you all out there. Any body have any good ideas as far as the exhaust pipe goes. I know there is some companies that sell Build it Yourself pipes. Has anyone had any experience with them. The cone and taper of the pipe impacts on the power the bike produces and I don't what to end up with a doggy pipe on the engine. Also I, after much debate, have decided to solid mount the motor with 5/16 or 1/4 thick T6061 aluminum. This should take some of the vibration out before it gets to the frame. I have most of the basics of the whole project on paper and in my head, but if anyone has a good suggestion let me know, cause a little advice can go a long way. By the way I read the forum on the guy with the CR500 motor who just sold it so he can't get pictures. Don't worry my project is real it's sitting in my garage right now. Thanks

lt500 roller you should look into buying a lt500motor dirtbike motors do no have a counterbalancer and rattles the frame apart and snaps motormounts and cracks exhaust pipe. If you want to build 500 try getting a lt250 frame and bolt an lt500 motor in it. i have an 87 lt500 and it has more power than u need head is ported and polished by paul turner and a have an fmf gold series pipe with bigger bore carb if you are going to build big put a streetbike motor in the frame i am in phila pa and i have a honda 750cc motor if u are interested email me and i can send u some pics of my quadzilla and the 750 motor

When they made the quadzilla, the 500cc engine was tuned for huge torque to push the 392lb machine around. A dirt bike engine of the same cc's will not be better than a lt500 engine. You will end up with a much doggier version of a quadzilla, with less low end torque. Believe it or not, suzuki knew how to tune the motor to suit the quad. They did kill the HP, but it was in trade for torque. There are alot of upgrades to get the power up in a big way on the LT500 engine. If you are still not into getting a LT500 engine, use a bigger twin. On danny-0's web site, he used a 750cc twin 2 stroke engine. I have a FMF pipe and silencer, FMF reeds, porting, and K&N. The power I have seems to be overkill to me. If Im not flipping it right over backwards, im roosting debres 30 feet in the air, or going 90mph. Plenty enough to get anyone into trouble. The only place I'd want more power is in the sand, because we all know sand robs power. It may be worth it however, just for a more reliable engine.

Thanks for the advice on the tranny, I had thought of that and I believe it will hold. I only have 1000.00 in the project right now, so I not over my head financially on the bike. It should be about a 2100.00 quad when I am done. As for the comment on the motor choice. The KX engine is also a very torquey engine. I have the jug at at Mike's in Ponca City getting a re-sleeve and moderate port and polish job. I told him to keep the power down in the low and mid-range. I think the engine will be fine in the bike as far as Power/torque to weight goes. Did the LT500 motor have a power valve on it from the factory, just curious. I Need some help on the exhaust pipe guys. Let me know if you have ANY advice. And for the comment on the VIBRATION. I spoke with a friend in Tulsa who has raced TT for many years. He has built several custom bikes in the past. He told me that the Aluminum (T6061 3/8 thick)would take the worst part of the vibration out of the chassis and won't crack, but we will see. One more thing. Do you know any body that can couter balance the engine, just for the future in case the vibration is still to much. Thanks

Yes the LT500 engine has a power valve from factory for more low end torque. Good luck with the project and keep us posted! Stick with a small expansion chamber on the pipe for more torque. You may want to look at how a pipe for that engine you have is designed...but thats not the design you want, its for power for a dirt bike. I think your best bet is to buy a pipe and silencer for the LT500 engine and weld the flange of the other 500 engine onto the pipe. FMF makes a nice pipe that makes great low end toque. Your 500 engine may seem really torquey on a bike, but not with 392lbs behind it. Keep all your mods for bottom to mid range power. When your done with the project, race a good running LT500 and see if you can keep up.
