NOOB 1987 250x Help!!!
#1
Hey guys, My name is Ryan out of the southern Indiana area. I am 21 and totaly new to the 4 wheeler world. My little brother really got me thinking about it when i drove him to pick up a 4 wheeler in my truck. Anyway long story short i bought a 1987 250x from him that he had recently purchased and didnt want to mess with. According to the guy we bought it from it had this and that done to the motor, but with no recipts to any parts or labor who knows what it has. And for $500 what do you expect. So my plans right now are for some new nerf bars, grab bar, bumper, and new body. I wanted to know if you guys could give me some pointers and part places for my motor overhaul. Give me everything you got. And i want to know some good power upgrades. I am tryin to make this 4 wheeler kind of nice. But my budget isnt unlimited so nothing rediculously expensive. Thanks guys. Ryan.

Hey Ryan excellent started bike and very dependable too. First things first being it is an 87 go over all bearing, bushings, sprockets, chain, brakes, master cylinders (check for leaks), change oil and filter, check air filter, air pressure. This old it is bound to be needing new a-arm bushings, swing arm bushing, ball joints, shock bushings, and probably bearings. Lone Star made a good twin carrier bearing housing, and locking axel nut. Once you get that all good and tight and sure that nothings gonna fall apart on ya then move on to performance mods. First off, Uni air filter or K&N with a pipe and carb jetting. That will give you your biggest cheapest increase.
After that maybe a high comp Wiseco piston and rings and possibly cylinder bore depending on how it looks. After that I'd drop in a high perf. cam. You should be good to go after that.
These mods arent cheap but if I ever get another X this would be the way I would go. I had one and loved it but got sick of replacing parts. I didnt have much money and when something broke I had to replace it with used stuff that wasnt in much better shape than what I already had. I will probably buy another one, one day and really trick it out. I like parts from AC for the front push bar, rear grab bar, and nerf bar. Maier has plastics but if I were you I would try and find the gray and red ones that you have or even the blue and white. I like them both. Once everything else is done and it's running like a raped ape, you could get the frame powder coated and work on some other cosmetic improvements but what I have suggested should keep you and the pocketbook busy for a while...
Welcome to the world of big boys toys. You'll love your new X after it's all rebuilt!! Congrats!!! If you have any questions just PM me and I'll help you out the best I can.

I hear ya buddy! I just got married last August, and we have been house hunting. They say it's a buyers market but houses here are still asking high numbers. I keep trying to buy all my toys before it's family time. This forum is awesome. I dont read many of the other sections mainly just the Polaris one and it is the most active and informative. If you ever need help and cant get it in the Honda section hop into the Polaris one and ask. The guys are great and more than likely will have the answer. We even have our own Polaris tech. He goes by Old Polaris Tech and is worth his weight in gold. If your into jumping and hillclimbing you'll want to upgrade from that X, but don't ever sell it cause you'll totally regret it like I am now. Also when your ready to convert over to just a trail crawler, the Sportsman is hard to beat. It isnt the fastest, but sure is the most comfortable, and the AWD system is top notch. I'm no brand basher by any means just really love my Sportsman.
