Engine Break-in Question.
#1
I just had the engine rebuilt and was suppose to run premix gas along with the oil injection. Well as it happened, the mechanic forgot a plug in the oil line so injector never supplied oil. Anyway I burned a tank of gas before I discouvered the oil injection problem and now when I start up the bike, it smokes heavyly. Now this is running cold & I haven't had the chance to let it warm up some.
My question is; How bad should it be smoking running premix & oil injection at the same time? I'm talking thick cloud on a calm day, hope thats normal.

I had a 93 350L 4x4, almost the same machine, I also had the engine rebuilt and ran pre-mix along with the injection, and yes it smoked like a ba$tard, long trail of thick blue smoke behind you always, being a 2-stroke they use the gas to cool the piston/crank/etc, running it lean obviously can blow it up, AS can running too rich, too much oil can be bad, 2-strokes require VERY little oil, I have had more problems running on the rich side then I have on the lean side by far. I'd take the pre-mix out and run it, I assume the injection is about the same as the blaster? (24:1) that is PLENTY for a 2-stroke, break in period of not. Anyways, just my theory..

Thanks for the reply! I think i'll be thinning the gas in my tank till it's back to plain gas. Even my owners manual said i should mix gas for the first tank, but that's just to make sure the oil injection works I guess. Well i'm going for a ride Sat so i'll see how she runs now. If you look north you might see my cloud trail.:-)

You should be able to tell if its getting oil with just the injection, if the smoke has a blue tint to it then you are good to go, jetting is kind of a hard subject cuz it is diffrent for every machine, too rich is bad as is too lean, do you know how to do a "plug chop"? (open it up for a good distance then hit the kill switch and brakes, take the plug out and look at the two tips (black=rich white=lean) to describe it easily. That is probally the best way to determine how the engine is running (besides a dyno). After you take out the pre-mix you might want to do a plug chop just to make sure its not TOO lean, if it is then I would remove the inj. do the pre mix. Though I dont think it would be a problem unless you plugged it off and forgot about it or something.
As for the owners manual, bahhhh... last place I'd go for info on my blaster would be the yammy dealer, he told me to put 10w30yamalube in the injector!!
One last thing, take it easy on it for a little while if you want it to last, polaris's tend to ride in the peak RPM's, on a new motor thats alot of stress. Have fun!
