carb jet kits
#1
Guys, I am considering putting a K&N jet kit on my LT-500. It's engine is stock except the K&N air filter. I am running the 27 inch tri claws and bi-claws and would like a bit more power. Is any of you running a jet kit and how do you like them? I want no bullsh** answers. I want to know what you really think, not what you think your buddies would want you to think. I hate to spend money for nothing considering I don't have enough anyway. Is the performance really that great?

after you put the K&N on did you rejet? If not save your money on the jet kit and try going up one size on the main jet, or try moving the clip on the needle up or down as this will richen or lean out your engine. I suspect the filter leaned your engine out some.
The clip on the needle is a free change, amain jet cost $4.00. Make sure your filter is clean and not over oiled. An over oiled filter just lets less air flow. Save your money and dont buy the jet kit. Use the money for better exhaust down the road, at which time you will have to re jet again and buy more jets. good luck

zippy, I didn't re-jet when I added the K&N. There isn't any real need to. It isn't leaning out my mixture any. It runs fine. I just want a bit more juice ya know. How do I know which jet to buy for it? I have never had the need to buy any so my knowledge of carbs and jetting is weak.
Does the basic jet change really boost the available power? Can you really feel it in the seat of the pants? I just don't want to go into it unless it is really worth it. (don't fix it if it ain't broke)That comes from being in the Air Force for 12 years.

Unless you get an aftermarket pipe to let the engine breath better you probably wont feel that much improvement. I'd say with the pipe, air filter and re jetting you would get around 5-10% more horsepower, thats a rough guess. Thats not really a big, big improvement that you sound like you want. Thats why I say dont spend money on a jet kit. You may not even need a bigger jet, I just guess the K&N leaned out your quad and you could probably richen it up some. K&N advertises horsepower gains with simply a filter change, that change is because your engine is getting more air, it still gets the same amount of fuel so therefore the mixture is a little leaner. Most factory settings are a little rich (to prevent the engine from leaning out and overheating) so leaning it out a little usually wont hurt.
the jets are in your carb, to see them youll have to remove the bowl on the bottom of the carb..see your owners manual. remove the main jet and look at the number, go to a parts shop and get the next size up. If you know the bike is stock, call the dealer and ask what the factory main jet size is, thats an easy way. when you remove the bowl just look for the similar part and switch it. If you dont like how the quad performs, your only out $4.00 and your time.
here are some sites that may help, http://www.ngksparkplugs.com/techinf...aq/faqread.asp this is on reading plugs and this is on jetting http://www.mhv.net/~kewlman/thumper/jetcarb.htm also go to the white brothers site and dig around, they have a good directions on rejetting.
