MXBUBS1, I have done this conversion and have just returned from California where we designed an exhaust to fit a YZF in a 400EX chassis, because I'm looking into making conversion kits to do just that. I have ran mine for about two years now and I definitly like it. If you are interested let me know, if I do it they will include billot front mounts if I go ahead with it. I also had a pipe designed for a TRX250R engine in the 400EX chassis. So if I get enough of a response I will make kits available. If you are planning on doing it for real let me know at Sickman80@hotmail.com. My quad was featured in the September issue of both Dirt Wheels and ATV Sport if you want to see how it looks.

Adam...just gotta say that your machine is pretty slick.Since that article I've thought about a 250r motor, but was unsure how it will mount with the swingarm.Your advice would be appreciated. Thanks,Jim

It mounts fine with the stock swing-arm set-up. I just used the stock '86 Swing-arm mount bracket for the 250R engine at first. Then made my own custom one to fit with the Houser Swing-arm which is wider on the right side than a stocker. If your interested in doing it let me know. I have pipes designed and if there is enough interest I can make them available along with billet mounts.

Thanks,

Adam

I will have to book mark your email address Adam.Right now I am just "thinking" about it.When I come across a 250r engine for the right price is when I'll start the ball rolling. Thanks for the tips.Jim

i really dont know much about the honda bikes..

how much does the 400ex weigh compared to the 250r 4trx?
i'm sure the 250r has more power than the 400ex motor. but why put a 250r motor in a 400ex frame "IF" the frame is in fact heavier?

i took LT500 motor and put in LT250 frame to save on weight..
just wondering...

Reason for the R engine in the EX frame are:

1) 400EX weighs more due to the engine, NOT the frame. If anything the 400EX frame is lighter.

2) They quit making the 250R in '89, which makes it very old and they break every ride when someone like me rides it.

3) The 400EX handles better than a 250R and all the parts are MUCH cheaper. Plus I can buy a new frame when mine dies, can't buy a new 250R frame. Contrary to popular belief, a stock frame should only last 2 years if raced hard.

4) You ask why not buy an after market frame then. Well they cost $2500 and will start breaking in 2 years also, whereas I can buy 5 400EX frames for the cost of one aftermarket frame.

That's why,

Adam

hey thats good then.
i just didnt know..
i'm not into anything but drag racing so i really dont pay much attention to the motocross or scrambles type racing.. so i dont know what lasts or not.
my suzuki LT250 frame has lasted since 1992(when i got it) and its an 86 frame. i just sold the bike last thanksgiving, but it was in perfect condition, no dents or rust(frame was powder coated)
i guess it all depends on your riding style.
