I want more power and speed for my 87 Honda 250x. It is mostly stock except for K&N filter and RCM Straight pipe which I don't even run cause its too loud for me. I don't want to spend a whole lot of money. Anyone PLEASE HELP!!!

Nick,

Depends on how far into the engine you want to get, but if you still have the stock muffler, you can get a larger headpipe & run the stock muffler and get the same performance increase (or better) than you have with the RCM system. Powroll sells headers that fit your stock muffler ($100).

After that, I'd go with a vented airbox lid ($50), as long as you're not using the thing as a submarine!

If you're willing to get into the engine, you can add a mild camshaft (about $130), and maybe a slightly larger piston kit ($100-$200).

If you do all this, you'll end up with about 20 - 25% more hp.

Pam...
That is a very intesting idea !! New header pipe w/stock muffler !! You said this will give you as much or more then the RCM set-up !! What about vs. FMF or SuperTrapp ?? How does this compare !! I would also like more performance, but don't want to get to loud ! I have a 300ex.

Thanks

I have an 87 X also. I did a pocket porting job on mine by just deburring the intake and exhaust ports and cleaning up the area under the valves. I then put a Wiseco 12.5 75.5mm piston in and rejetted the stock carb. I don't run an air box lid and I still have the stock exhaust to keep things quiet.
Its not the fastest X around, but it holds it own a whole lot better than it ever did before. I ride with other Xs and mine seems to have more top end power. I'm going with the cam, exhaust, and carb next.
