How far would the 02 sensor stick in to the pipe? It could cause air flow problems in the exaust. It looks to be about an inch long & the raptors headpipe isn't much bigger than that. I guess you could put it in just before the muffler but it would still block flow.

I wonder if they make a smaller 02 sensor, or if it only needed to stick in about an 1/8 inch then it may work.

Those are question that I myself have MOOSE.
But somthing like that would be ideal for tuning my Raptor.
I want to get something like this real soon. Does anyone have any better ideas?

Or do you think this setup would work?

I did alot of research on this a few weeks ago trying to adapt it to quad use.

The type of sensor they use in the k&n wont work without it being welded into the head pipe a few inches from the motor. The o2 sensor needs 2 things to get a reading, significant heat and o2, the sensor creates voltage based on the amount of o2 in the stream once it gets to a certain temperature. One way to do away with having to weld it into the exhaust header is to use a heated 4 wire o2 sensor.

The other problem is with the automotive type o2 sensor itself, they are cheaply made and use a quick switching from rich to lean, The cars cpu can determine the proper A/F mixture by measuring the time the sensor reads rich vs lean. The only way to get a linear (like realtime) would be to use a wideband o2 sensor - big money, and it doesnt come with this k&n unit. The common o2 sensor outputs bewteen .1 and 1 volt (1 volt being richest condition) this is very small potential and will require a very high impedance and extremely accurate meter to properly measure and calibrate. The voltage also switches very rapidly from rich to lean and vice versus and will give finicky results at best in atv applications.

There are ones available, but plan on spending bewteen $1000-2000 for em. There was an article in dirtwheels a little bit ago about using egt (exhaust gas temp) to get jetting right, it was only 500 or so and adapted from sleds, but you really have to know what your doing to read that since you have to be pretty close with your jetting before you start.

I run EGT guages on all my machines and have had very good luck with them. One note of caution is to stay away from the ones that are powered by your ignition like those for cars. An AutoMeter guage that a friend tried would vary with power output from the stator. The Digitron units run off a 9 volt battery. Lately, I have been using analog ones that require no power. I am at a loss how that works, but they give the same reading as my Digitron. The analog ones are $100.

The thing you can't do with an EGT that I think you may have hoped is to install it an say 'oh, I'm jetted rich'. It is best to install it and then jet it using traditional methods. The exact guage reading will vary by machine. Once you know the readings for optimal tuning, it is very repeatable. You can make changes like air box mods and jet to get your optimal reading back. The same is true with temperature and altitude changes.
