will removing the air box lid hurt the motor?

As long as your filter is held on with a clamp, the only problem will be running very lean !! if you plan on running like that all the time, you will need to go up anywhere from 2 to 4 sizes to keep from burning up the motor. Also, mud, water and anything else flying off the trail will find its way into the box a lot easier. Outerwears does make a box cover net, gives almost full flow, and stops a lot of the crud the wheels kick up. You will also notice a bit more engine noise, a deep throaty noise from the engine through the carb, really noticeable when you get on it.

If you are talking about removing it from your lakota, yes it will hurt it. There is nothing but the lid to hold the filter in place on the lakota. An option would be to drill some large holes (about 1"
in the lid and put it back on. The problem then is that the air filter is kinda low and exposed on the Lakota and more likely to take on water and mud. A better solution would be to get rid of the stock air box system and put a clamp on filter with water resistant outerware right on the carb. Be sure to get the jetting right.

most air box lids are under the seat on the air box with the filter in it. But the Lakota and Mojave have the filter in a box down on the side of the frame under the gas tank. The box under the seat behind the carb is just a plenum.
