350x motor in a 400ex frame
#1
I want to install a 350x motor into a 400ex frame, does anyone know of a conversion company that would have the allready made mounts for this ?I allready asked Powroll and they asked me why would I do this, who cares is what i thought, its my project. The thing is ,I have a extra 400ex frame and many parts and a new 350x motor laying around the garage,so why not combine the two.

If you end up selling that 400 frame I know someone who needs one. email me at Jason454@prodigy.net If you sell.

do it! the 350x motor is a good motor. the best part is the 6 speed transmission. you'll probably have to rig up the mounts your self but it would be a cool quad. i have heard of people putting 350x motors in 250r frames before so it shouldn't be too hard.

I just like to make things work that are almost impossible to do.I thought this project would fit that discription.getting all ready mounts would just help me out.Although my buddy wants me to put the 350x motor into the 300ex we just got done putting the 400ex front a-arms,shocks,(relocated shock tower),400ex swingarm, axle, etc.,and a 250r rear shock. This thing is totally awesome to ride, except the power of coarse.

I would just put the 350x motor in the 300ex frame. It goes in like it was made for it, with a two minor motor mount modifications. The 350x is a good motor, I would have to say it's just as fast if not faster than a 400ex, but I have never raced the two. I smoke it off the line with the raptor (could be the rider) and top speed is about equal to the raptor screaming in 4th gear or a low 5th, both quads stock in the engine department. It definitly is a work out kicking that big bore over if you don't have the proper "technique".

i would put the 350x motor in there.you can get way more power out of the 350x motor with mods then you can with the 400 ex.and since it has a 6 speed tranny you can get way more topend speed too.my nieghbor has a 350x in a 250r chassis with a few small mods like exhaust ,cam and high comp. piston.that thing smokes 400ex's.
but if you wanted to put it into a 300ex chassis like i did,it's direct bolt in.all you have to do is cut off about 1 inch of the rear upper mount for iut to fit and everything else lines up perfectly even the kicker fits in the little spot and the oil drain plug lines up on the bottom where the stock 300ex one is and the oil cooler can be routed up to the top of your left side shock tower and bolt right up perfectly..and there is a couple places that makes an exhaust for that conversion too.like powroll and ct i believe.good luck.

You're wasting your time and money trying to put a 350X into a 400EX chassis.
People will tell you that they're faster, more powerful, etc - but the truth of the matter is they are more legend than anything. I've owned a 350X for somewhere in the neighborhood of 16 years. My immediate family has owned at least 5 over the years, several since brand new. We still have two - one of which is VERY low hour and is bone stock.
The 350X engine is heavier than a 400EX engine. It's geared substantially lower even though it has a 6 speed trans (odd for an engine that everyone thinks develops more power).
The truth of the matter is the 350X has a smaller bore and stroke, a milder cam, a smaller carb, smaller intake, smaller valves, smaller intake and exhaust ports, a less efficient head design, and uses heavier componentry than a 400EX - They DO NOT produce more power than a 400EX.
The 350X develops great bottom end torque and has a VERY close ratio transmission, this makes them very torquey and makes the 3-wheeler a great and fun to ride trailrider. Even though it has a six speed trans, it is extremely close ratio and the top gear is quite a bit lower than top gear in a 400EX, so don't be expecting any blinding top speeds.
The reason they used to be put into 250R chassis's, was because back in the day they were plentiful - they were donated to many vo-tech schools and were easy to pick up at a reasonable price. They were also one of the better 4 stroke engines ** of the time ** and if you wanted a 4 stroke engine in a good chassis, putting one in a 250R chassis was about your only choice.
We've also done a 300EX to 350X conversion. This made a nice combo & was easy to do. However, it *was not* as fast as a stock 400EX - it did, however put out a good bottom end - but the mid range and top end do not even compare.
Can a 350X be built to be faster than a 400EX? Absolutely - however, so can a TRX90 if you've got the cash. Put equal amounts of money into a 350X and 400ex - the 400 will be faster. Many people like to compare garage built "440's" to professionally built 350X's - the thing you have to remember is many garage built 440EX's perform about the same as a stock 400EX. Professionally built 400EX's can run VERY well.
My suggestion - if you really want to do a 350X conversion - do it in a 300EX chassis, it's an easy and inexpensive swap and is an upgrade for the frame. If you've got a 400EX chassis without an engine, do yourself a favor and pick up a $500 400EX engine on eBay and put it where it belongs - in a 400EX frame.
Putting a 350X engine in a 400EX frame is a step backwards. Powroll is a company that specialized in the 350X engine, they know it pretty well. There's a good reason they asked why you'd want to do such a thing.
If your just dying for a challenging project -- don't waste your time and money putting a milder engine in a 400EX frame, go wilder, find a used CR500 engine. I have one in a 400EX frame - it can be done - yes, it's fast - vibration is manageable.
