Is there a trick to freeing valve collets that are stuck? I tried using a valve compressor that holds the valve seated and lowers the retainer, but the collets are jammed, preventing the spring compressor from compressing. I now use a different setup where I compress the spring but allow the valve to come off the seat. I use a plastic hammer to tap the valve to free the collets. I still have problems freeing the collets.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Use a socket or small piece of pipe with the inside bigger than the collet diameter. Wack the crap out of it two or three times and it'll break them loose. If you have the head off put a piece of rubber tire or something under the valve head to make the hit from the hammer more effective. don't go crazy with it but that will break them loose.
