I just bought an '87 LT250R, it's pretty much stock except for a 'vintage' dg silencer. This is the first stone-stock LT I've ever owned, what should be hopped-up first? Reeds, pipe/silencer,etc.? Are the "ram/rad" reed valves that much better than just regular performance reeds (are they worth the extra $$)? And lastly, who makes the best pipe/silencer for LT's?

I posted this on the suzuki board and got 0 responses..maybe someone here would like to help..

Well I would get a Paul Turner Mid pipe and fat boy silencer along with a rad valve and reed spacer. A K&N filter along with rejetting the carb will really wake up your bike. You could get even more with porting and head milling but then you will need to run race ga$. If you need more then get porting, head work and last a bigger carb. (39PWK worked good on mine).

I have an '87 Lt250 with these mods: FMF pipe & silencer, FMF ram Valve, Wiseco Piston(.040), K&N,
and it hauls. It has loads of bottem end, and the sixth gear is nice for duning(previously had an '86). It is an excellent bike, I love it. Has plenty of power for hills and MX. Haven't met a double I haven't cleared or a hill I haven't climbed. Other mods are a Works Duracross rear shock, Eliminator +2 ax, RPM +2 swingarm, Pro-Taper bars. I think you will enjoy your '87. I would do the pipe & sil and filter first to make it a little crisper. reeds too if you don't want a ram valve. Have fun.

I have just about decided on an FMF pipe/silencer and an FMF ram valve. It already has a UNI air filter on it, will probably leave it on for a while. Next question-- will it need to be rejetted? and if so, what should it be jetted (for sea level, or very close to it) after putting these things on? Where can you get jets at?
Thanks for the responses and help!

Yes if the pipe is any good you should have to jet up. I am assuming you have the stock 34mm Mikuni carb so you could get jets from tons of places in the magazines as well as your local dealer. I would say go 3 sizes bigger on the main jet as well as drop the clip on the needle a notch. You might also need to go up a size on the pilot but you might be able to get away with turning the air screw out a half turn and see if it still skips when its idling. If it idles high and doesn't crank up well then your pilot is too lean.
I would switch to a K&N unless you ride where its dusty they flow a little better(rated at 850CFM) verses 375CFM air flow for the foam filter and give more power.

I would go with something othere than FMF for the pipe. I myself would use a LRD chrome pipe. If u want some pics of this pipe to see how it looks email me at blaster20099@hotmail.com

I might do that too. Also am reconsidering Paul Turner pipes and 'fay boy' silencers. Biggest reason I was going to go the FMF route was it's cheaper and i had thier stuff on my '86 and liked it. If i can get the wife to let me turn loose a few more bucks, will go higher end than FMF. I am going to do a bigger carb last- will a bigger carb require a different intake boot/reed/ram valve?
Thanks

You can use the stock intake on a 39mm carb. The trick is to dip the intake into some boiling water for a few seconds. When its soft it slides right on
Hope this helps
